The Controversial Issue Of Assisted Suicide

Not only is the treatment time consuming but running to the doctor can take a lot of time. Usually, when I go to a doctor, ninety minutes out of my day is involved between waiting to see the doctor, the actual visit, and follow up. Doctor visits are not usually the only visit required; nursing visits, therapy, and lab tests also take several hours a day. Again, a lot of wasted time.

Assisted suicide has numerous complexities surrounding the act. Webster’s dictionary definition of Assisted Suicide is:suicide committed by someone with assistance from another person: Physician -Assisted Suicide. Physician - assisted suicide (PAS) involves a doctor who helps a person either with knowledge or the means to commit suicide. Several countries allow physicians to actually help in the suicide of patients, Canada,Belgium, the Netherlands,Luxembourg, and Switzerland. The United States has six states which allow medical aid in dying. This practice is allowed if a terminally ill patient has 6 months or less to live. They will be given a lethal dose of medicine to self administer to end their life. The six states include: California,Colorado,District of Columbia,Montana(via court decision)Oregon,Vermont, and Washington.(CNN)

Many people hear assisted suicide and they think that it is criminal or unjust. Many people, more than we realize, have to battle with terminal illness. Every day, they go through pain and suffering. They shouldn’t have to go through this because of the opinions of other people. Assisted suicide or acts like it can help them. They have the right to choose how they want their life to go.

Assisted suicide is a rather controversial issue in contemporary society. When a terminally ill patient formally requests to be euthanized by a board certified physician, an ethical dilemma arises. Can someone ethically end the life of another human being, even if the patient will die in less than six months? Unlike traditional suicide, euthanasia included multiple individuals including the patient, doctor, and witnesses, where each party involved has a set of legal responsibilities. In order to understand this quandary and eventually reach a conclusion, each party involved must have their responsibilities analyzed and the underlying guidelines of moral ethics must be investigated. Even though assisted suicide was not discussed throughout the sixteen to eighteen hundreds, ethical philosophers investigated the roots of human morals in an attempt to create an overarching rule that would help determine if “death with dignity” is morally justified.

The fact of suicide is un-describable and usually frowned upon and never talked about. Suicide has many opinions that deal with religion, family, or politics. Assisted suicide is something that is very much talked about in society. This is also known as euthanasia or mercy killing. Assisted suicide is when another person takes the life of a struggling person with the person's permission. There are many issues with this. Many see this as a form of murder, while others see it as a chance to complete someone's wish. On the government side of things, assisted suicide is illegal in many states. In the state of North Carolina assisted suicide is illegal. Many of the issues deal with family, religion, and government morals.

An argument from those who are against assisted suicide is that assisted suicide is unethical. Heather Newton, Article Editor for The Georgetown Journal of Legal Ethics, argues that assisted suicide is similar to euthanizing. The difference between the two acts is that in assisted suicide the medication is administered by the patient, wherein euthanizing the doctor administers the medication. Also this process can be considered a violation of the Hippocratic Oath that every doctor takes. This oath states “I will give no deadly medicine to anyone if asked, nor suggest any such counsel”(Quffa, Voinea). Physician assisted suicide is a procedure that allows physicians to prescribe their patients a lethal medication that they can inject themselves with in order to die on their own terms. There are specific requirements that the patients must meet in order to receive this medication. Physician assisted suicide is only for patients that have life threatening illnesses and do not have much time left to live. It is legal in numerous places around the world including certain places in the United States. Others believe that the act of assisting someone to their death is playing God. Acton says that money and power play a huge impacting role when it comes to the topic of assisted suicide. Some health care companies are rejecting treatments in order to raise their bottom line. This is outrageous to know that people companies put their financial stability before the well being of those who are disabled, poor, and sick.

I believe they should have to abide by the same laws because they are still humans that can make decisions. If there is someone that is believed to not be able to take care of themselves should be under full time supervision. This is so that they don 't lose control of themselves and some can help them through life.

As a daughter, granddaughter and friend, I am thoroughly concerned about the people surrounding me and their well-being. Just as any other family member or friend would feel about me, I would always want them to be happy and healthy. Euthanasia is the end of a person that was suffering from an illness or a traumatic accident in the past that has affected them and changed them to a different person. Most of these people find them self to believe they are a nuisance to others such as family members or some care givers. Euthanasia is the process of end a live of someone in great suffering to relive the pain of whatever caused it in the first place. Euthanasia is one of the most controversial topics because of religious purposes or the choice of choosing a sooner death.
