Presently, many public schools and libraries limit access to the internet on their computers using filtering software. They censor websites based on texts, images, third party ratings, and much more ("Statement on Library Use of Filtering"). The purpose of filters is to screen out harmful or inappropriate material, while still allowing access to educational web pages. A significant amount of the internet is used for harassment, the planning of terrorist attacks, cyber-bullying, and conveying harmful views. Many web pages exist that promote the detriment of specific groups of people, such as LGBT people, Muslims, and African Americans. These websites target children and influence them online. (Hudson - "Hate Speech Online"). Furthermore, the internet is filled with obscene images and child pornography. The blockage of these damaging sites is why many supporters of internet censorship believe it is important to filter public computers. …show more content…
In 1998, a minor in Livermore, California downloaded a pornographic image from their library computer. The parents attempted to sue the library claiming that they needed to install a filter. The case was dismissed by the state superior court, but internet censorship was beginning to become a major social issue. In November of the same year, a federal judge in Virginia removed a law from effect that enforced a public library to install filtering software on both adult’s and children’s computers. The policy was withdrawn due to its violation of the first amendment. Although internet censorship rules were not yet being enacted by the government, many legislators continued to proceed forward in creating filtering
While in the developing stages of life children should not be exposed to things like violence, racism, sexism, porn, and inappropriate language. In a “Kids USA Survey,” Scholastic Magazine, children took an essay to see what they thought should be censored in their life, 53.1% of children in the United States voted that censorship protects them from content inappropriate for them. 6,000 votes both girls and boys voted that some censorship was needed. Parents should be responsible for censoring what their children see. Schools should also block any content they would see dangerous.
These countries use censorship to protect the society by using fear or violence to control people similar to a dictator’s country. In a democratic country, protection could be banning media or limiting internet access to prevent revolts, riots, or rebellions. The societies that go so far to stop harmful info about them are usually totalitarian countries like USSR/Communist Russia, but some can be democratic countries like the United States. Similarly, these super countries use censorship because of social media and structures can pose “a threat to moral values” (Aliprandini). These threats are referring to people, and the social areas which are online media through phones, computers, newspapers, television, etc., may change the person’s view of what’s right or wrong.
Many consider censorship in the United States as an elixir of safety to the public. Some consider censorship to play a major role in maintaining social standards. On the other hand, many others consider censorship as imposing unreasonable restriction on the freedom of expression. Therefore the topic of whether or not censorship affects the first amendment has been subject to much debate.
1a) The internet is compared to provide an interpretation of the first amendment protection as it was not present at the time of passing protection laws as a communication medium to find a common ground because it has similarities and as well as differing natures, values, abuses and dangers to the library, television and public places which the law treats differently. Libraries: It requires the libraries to enable the filter to Internet access for adults as well as children if they want to receive funds for Internet hookups.
When it comes to the government multiple questions are raised, particularly whether they control us or if we actually have an effect on their decisions. Personally I feel the government is definitely controlling us. As a student, I am confined to doing the grueling daily task put in place by the government. Attending school is a prime example of the excessive power the government has. America is supposed to be a nation of freedom founded by our ancestors in the late 1700’s , how much freedom do Americans really have?
Censorship is dangerous, and too much of it can lead to an inevitable destruction of our
Canadians are so used to this concept of freedom of speech that the government barely even bats an eyelash when it comes protests, democracy or change. A lot of Canadians take this for granted and some are even shocked when they hear that other people in the world get killed for speaking their mind. This culture of freedom has instilled an entitlement into Canadians even from when they were young, my daughter included. My daughter Sophie has grown up living a very privileged life, and sometimes look back and I’m amazed at the differences between our childhoods.
Censorship of The First Amendment This paper will discuss how censorship denies citizens of the United States our full rights as delineated in the First Amendment. It will outline how and why the first amendment was created and included in the Constitution of the United States of America. This paper will also define censorship, discuss a select few legal cases surrounding freedom of speech and censorship as well as provide national and local examples of censorship.
In this article, Johnson explores the multiple newspapers that came under scrutiny from the postmaster general, under the censorship law. Local postmasters were ordered to send any and all suspicious letters dealing with the war, to Washington. Johnson introduces The Masses newspaper, was the most famous to come under fire by Burelson. To be censored under the law the material forwarded must be willfully obstructive or disloyal. Numerous papers would come under the same scrutiny, however papers with friends in Washington where able to have their circulation restored with help from Wilson.
The general argument made by Melinda D. Anderson in her work “How Internet Flirting Hurts Kids,” is that full student access to the Internet has become limited by excessive censorship by school districts. More specifically, Anderson argues that districts are enforcing too many barriers on the Internet that it can barricade a student’s ability to learn. She writes, “the pernicious practice by school districts of overzealous Internet censorship” has been used too much that it does not simply keep students safe from obscene content, instead it obstructs knowledge. Censorship on YouTube for example, creates a barrier for students to learn from tutorials or lectures online. In this passage, Anderson is suggesting that districts are overusing their
Censorship can be described as the act of cutting out certain material that can be considered obscene or inconvenient for the community. This material can be found in social media such as in the TV, radio, or the internet. Censorship can be challenged because of the first amendment: freedom of speech. Free expression is the right of expressing opinions and ideas without any fear of being restrained or censored. However, freedom of speech does not include the right to incite actions that would harm others or the distribution of obscene material (Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, 2000).
For example, in the Scopes Trial a substitute teacher was in trouble for teaching evolution in Tennessee where the Butler Act id in effect. This law says that teachers are not allowed to teach human evolution in any state-funded school. All in all, there are several different types of censorship. Whether they are good or bad is all point of view. For the people doing the censoring it may be good but to the people being censored it prevents them from staying
Production companies soon created their own, private methods of self censorship, through the help of government Lobbyists such as William H. Hays, who had a hand in creating the Hays Code, which was one of the first, and most well known acts of self censorship employed by production companies(Barbas 692). It listed a series of topics that production companies should take into account when creating the content of their films. The official list of “Don’ts” and “Be Carefuls” included a multitude of taboo topics for the day and age setting a boundary that many hoped would successfully quell the discontent and hostility that had arisen at the time (Barbas 692). The ‘Don’ts’ section included eleven items, such as profanity, including terms
"Who has the right to monitor internet usage and, if so, when are they allowed to have access to someone’s internet? The government has the right to monitor someone’s internet history and usage when there is a potential threat to someone’s security or safety. Many other aspects of US citizens’ lives are regulated and regulating internet just be adding one more thing to the list. Some argue for limited monitoring, while others believe that the internet should be censored. Censorship of the internet restricts first and ninth amendment rights, but also gives a sense of security to many people.
People might think children or people will use the internet for ill intent, but that can be said about anything in life, from driving a car to owning a gun. I do not believe that we should ever censor anything thing online because the first amendment guarantee that right. What you might find offensive will not offend another person and that very valuable information could help someone immensely, furthermore we live in a free country, not a dictatorship and have rights that protect us from other people imposing their will onto us. The first thing a dictatorship does when taking over a country is to destroy literature that evokes free thought and complex ideas.
