The Cop and the Anthem is a short story that includes interesting morals that the reader could use within their own lives. The story takes place in downtown New York City and is centered around a man by the name of Soapy. The decision to read the story based on its interesting title that the author had given it was a very great idea. Before reading the story, the reader probably expected the story to be centered around a police officer who enjoyed music, but after reading a few lines the reader could tell it wasn't. Personally, I enjoyed the shocking end to the story. I'd recommend the story to anyone. The author O. Henry provides a hidden message to the reader telling them that people are the ones in control of their own future by setting goals for ourselves. He has already made his decision and he utilizes his plan that he has applied in the past winters. Depending on the circumstances of anyone's situation, anyone's objective in life should be to survive, and living a good life. Since it seems as if Soapy is down on his luck, he is desperately doing anything he can to get incarcerated. Soapy is willingly wanting to go to prison for just three months. It's hard to believe that someone would actually want to go to prison, but at least within those three months in Blackwell's Island, Soapy have would have his own bed, and he will be able to get a free meal. The story states that the prison on Blackwell's Island has always been his winter home, letting the reader know that Soapy has done this multiple times. their personal
