The Crucible by Arthur Miller was based on the horrors of the Salem witch trials of 1912. Arthur Miller tells of a girl named Abigail Williams, who started the accusation of witchcraft. Abigail gets many girls in Salem Massachusetts to lie about witchcraft for her own little game. Then towards the end of the story everyone realizes they let her fool them. Arthur Miller focuses on Abigail and two other main characters in the Crucible. Abigail Williams was a major part of the play most of the conflict happened because of her. Abigail Williams is the vehicle that drives the play. Abigail accuses Elizabeth Proctor of using witchcraft. “Abigail were stabbed tonight; a needle were found stuck into her belly” said Hale. “And she charges me?” says Elizabeth. “Aye” said Hale. Abigail told the court that she was guilty but John kept saying that his wife wasn’t guilty. Elizabeth thinks that Abigail wants to kill her for John Proctor. John and Abigail had an affair and Abigail is still trying to get with him. In act 1 page 25 Abigail claims, “I will not, I cannot! you loved me John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet! So Elizabeth also believes that she is going to kill her. The only reason Elizebeth got dragged into this situation is because Elizabeth is married to John Proctor and Abigail keeps trying to get her out of the way.
Abigail Williams was like senator McCarthy, Abigail was accusing people of doing things without any proof. McCarthy was also accusing people of being communist without evidence. Abigail was pretty much like McCarthy because Abigail accuses Elizabeth Proctor of using witchcraft. They both act the same ,but they had different situations. Arthur Miller wrote the Crucible because he himself was accused of being a communist. You can not accuse people about anything if you don’t have the information to back it
