“Why is Your Hair a Broccoli” How Characters Changed to Please Others. The Crucible by Arthur Miller takes place in Salem, Massachusetts during the 1692 Salem Witch Trials. Many people from the town were being accused of witchcraft and their only way out was to confess. Rather then in American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang is a mixture of three stories that at the end connect, it takes place in modern time, somewhere in the United States mostly in a high school. In all three stories of American Born Chinese the main character is not the biggest fan of himself and because of it they try to change. Abigail was being accused of witchcraft and of possessing the girls. She explained that she had nothing to do with witchcraft. Abigail starts screaming she can see a bird ”why do you come yellow bird”(pg71). The girls then just repeat what Abigail says, they start to conform to what Abigail and the town want to hear. Another key point is while in the courtroom Mary yells at Abigail saying ”stop it ” Abigail and the girls repeat ” stop it” (pg 73) the girls continue to yell stop it and follow what Abigail says and the actions she does. They continue to do what others do and not what they think or want to do, they also know that if they don’t , they may be accused of witchcraft so they continue to just do what Abigail wants them to do and keep repeating everything she says. These were some of the ways that the girls and Abigail changed who they were so that the town would accept them and not blame them for witchcraft. When Jin first noticed Amelia during class he realized he really liked her. Later on he saw Amelia talking to Greg. Jin thought Amelia liked Grey so he decided to change who he was by changing his hair like Grey had it. “Your Hair ?” “why is his hair a broccoli” (pg. 102) Another key point is Jin wanted to be liked by Amelia so that’s why he changed his hair so he could fit in and be liked by people he wanted to like him. (pg 125) “Now what would you like to become” in the image it shows how Jin changes from a Chinese boy to white American boy (pg 199) “A new face deserves a new name. I decided to call myself Danny.” After changing his name and his appearance he decided to become someone who he wanted to be but not who he was. This was one of the characters from American Born Chinese that changed who he was so that he would be accepted and liked by the people that he wanted to be near.
