The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller in 1953, takes place in Salem Massachusetts in 1692 during the salem witch trials. The play begins in the home of Samuel Parris, whose daughter is lying on the bed appearing very sick. Abigail Williams, Betty’s friend, tries to convince Parris of their innocence but Parris saw them and his slave dancing in the woods. When Parris confronts Tituba about what he saw she immediately admits her fault but places the blame on other characters in the play commencing the theme of mass hysteria. My literary graphic is based on the character Thomas Danforth, the judge who oversees the witch trials. The theme in The Crucible that I believe best describes Danforth’s role in the witch trials is lies and defeat. In my literary graphic I have a blue silhouette of Danforth on a red background. …show more content…
You pretend to be seperate, to have your own code, something that makes up for the horrors. But they are part of you. They will never go away” (Loki, Marvel’s The Avengers). I thought that this quote represented Thomas Danforth’s role in the town very well. If a person was accused of being a witch they either had to rat out their friends of being witches or be hung themselves. In the quote it says “You lie and kill in the service of liars and killers”, when someone was accused of being a witch but they refused to out any other people of being witches or just admit that they were a witch, they would be given an unfair trial and be hung. All these people were accused of being witches by their friends who had been too cowardly to stand up for themselves. The quote also states, “You pretend to be seperate, to have your own code, something that makes up for the horrors”. I believe that this part of the quote represents the trials. Thomas Danforth gave each person a trial but they were unfair and when he finally understood what was happening he continued sentencing people to
For example, the provocative dialogue during the witch trials creates controversy among the town of Salem based on his strict statements such as, “But you must understand, sir, that a person is either with this court or he must be counted against it” (3.345-347). Considering this, Arthur Miller shows how ultimate control of the paramount decisions of the incriminated people makes Danforth have a stern viewpoint of maintaining order instead of bequeathing proper justice. Moreover, innocent people who are accused of witchcraft must follow the inconsiderate consequences, “The law, based upon the Bible, and the Bible, written by Almighty God, forbid the practice of witchcraft, and describe death as the penalty thereof” (3.611-614). Under those circumstances, Miller shows how the decisions of the witch trials are mostly influenced not only by Danforth, but their legitimate successors, including Reverend Parris. Speaking about this, Arthur Miller reflects his point of view regarding injustice based on the desperate attitude of Reverend Parris in motivation to protect himself in court.
Rebecca Nurse: A symbol of Purity in Curruption The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, is a dramatized and partially fictionalized tale of the Salem witch trials which took place in the Province of Massachusetts Bay’s. in the early 1690. The trials led to the execution of twenty people, mostly young women, and the imprisonment of others. Rebecca Nurse, who was both a real victim of the Salem Witch Trails, and is a character in this historical play, was a righteous, esteemed, and brave woman who falls victim to her community’s corruption, hysteria, and fear.
Arthur Miller's The Crucible highlights a human frailty, arrogance, responsible for the witch hysteria in the 1690s. Each character portrays arrogance which make him abuse power. The play explores the human nature of being arrogant and the fear of tarnishing one's reputation, by acting unmorally. Through Hale's, Parris's, and Danforth's actions, Miller indicates that arrogance is the frailty most responsible for the witch hysteria.
Also, the information given in this story has no hard evidence. Only the number of people who were hanged for being accused of witchcraft. This quote shows that the believe in witchcraft was
1- Since they follow other peoples religion they had turn this new colony, the same as the one they came from 2- Everyone followed a religion, some didn’t and that’s where the witch-hunts years started, it was revenge because if someone didn’t like someone else they will put the blame on them. 3- Tituba- a slave Abigail- she was a 17th year old orphan Betty-
“You will confess yourself or I will take you out and whip you to death, Tituba,’ stated by Parris. ‘This woman must be hanged! She must be taken and hanged!’ stated by Putnam,” (Miller, 44). This displays the violent nature that has taken over Salem due to the hysteria of witches.
The first accused women had been of low status in the village. Those who followed were upstanding members of the community. For example, a woman by the name of Rebecca Nurse hardly fit the image of a witch. She was an elderly woman in her seventies who was very infirm and deaf. Rebecca Nurse’s reaction to her accusation was typical of the guilt-ridden Puritan mentality.
In his book, “A Modest Inquiry into the Nature of Witchcraft (1702),” clergyman John Hale comes forth to confront the recent events going on at the time. Initially, Hale alludes to the questionable actions and activities of the townspeople being accused of witchcrafts, and being imprisoned as punishment. In addition, he discloses how everyone suspicious will be accused, not even young children are safe from the hands of this fate. Hale’s purpose of publishing this book was to describe the incident of the Witch Trials, and to reveal his experience of the trials, since his own wife was accused. By employing a didactic tone, Hale relays the actions of the past that targeted the Puritans and those wrongly accused of witchcrafts, so this occurrence
In The Crucible Salem, Massachusetts suddenly has a problem with witchcraft. Most of the townspeople and farmers accuse one another of witchcraft either for land or revenge. In “It’s okay --
“Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sisters. And that is all.
“Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you,” (Act I, 160). She was the first person in the play to accuse a person of seeing people summon spirits of the Devil. This caused a massive, wide-scale witch hunt to take place; families torn apart, mothers, fathers, and even children murdered for what was considered to be the greater good. Now, others began to accuse people of witchcraft and people who had been lifelong friends to each other now had no choice other than to point fingers at each other or be put to death. Widespread panic and unreasonable action was sweeping through everyone in Salem, all because of a little lie by
Brooke Fulmer Mrs. Carroll Honors English 11 November 24th, 2015 The Crucible Arthur Miller wrote the play “The Crucible” to shine a light on the Salem witch trials of 1692. The play is set in Salem, a small town in colonial Massachusetts. During this time, they had a Puritan society and the government was a theocracy, a system of government in which priests rule in the name of God or a god. “The Crucible” has a very serious, devastating tone with constant biblical references, showing how serious people of the church took the Bible.
In “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller was published in 1953 and is based on the witch trials in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Parris the reverend his niece Betty would not wake up and there was no medical cause and concluded that the girls were bewitched. Soon girls started crying and saying people's names that were haunting them and this sparked the witch hunt. Over the next eight months, twenty-seven were convicted, nine were hung, one crushed to death, and over hundred imprisoned. In Arthur Miller’s book "The Crucible" the upper class holds the power since they are of more important and thought of than people below them.
The Crucible is a play taking place between 1692 to 1693 during the Salem witch trials; written by Arthur Miller. Multiple girls were caught dancing in the forest, drinking something from a flask. They were accusing many individuals for causing them to contact the devil. The ring leader Abigail had an affair with John Proctor, a farmer and the boss of Abigail. “Woman, plead with him!”
While it is true that taking care of oneself and loved ones is important, certain principles are worth risking one's life or quality of life for. In the play "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller, the character John Proctor stands up for his principles of truth and justice, even though it means risking his reputation and his life. One of the quotes that illustrate this is when John Proctor says "I have given you my soul; leave me my name!"(143) He is willing to sacrifice his reputation and name for the principle of truth and justice, showing his strong conviction in his beliefs. Similarly, in the movie "Good Night, and Good Luck," Edward R. Murrow risks his career and safety to speak out against the communist witch-hunts led by Senator Joseph McCarthy.
