Good morning and welcome to the 7am daily news reports. This is the place where a lot is said but unfortunately nothing is done. I am Tanna Collet and I will be your reporter for this morning. In our headlines today, we have the story the tragic accident that kills a mother’s miracle child. Gauteng Mother, Precious Matsmello, who tried for years to have a baby was hit with a new trauma when a drunk driver crashed into their informal settlement, killing 3 children, including her six-year-old-son, and leaving a forth child suffering with head injuries. The driver was then beaten to death by a mob of furious community members. Drunk driving a very prominent problem that teenagers and young adults tend to neglect in South Africa and worldwide on a daily basis. According to statistics South Africa has the most drunk-driving related deaths than anywhere else in the world, with a 26.6% chance of dying on the roads. I have chosen to report on this shameful issue in order to raise awareness and educate those listening about the significance of drunk driving and the consequences South Africans face everyday. In todays society the youth like to see themselves as a lot more mature than they are. They convince themselves that they know better and thus tend to neglect the true dangers of drinking and driving. Drunk driving is a serious social issue in South Africa. Alcohol interferes with the brains communication pathways and causes disruptions. In particular, it makes it harder
“There’s No Benefit to Lowering the Drinking Age” explains, on average about eleven teens die daily as a result of drunk driving (Voas 464). When teens throw a party, alcohol is usually involved. Then once the party is over the kids have to get home somehow and they often drive themselves. When an alcoholic drink is placed in an eighteen-year-old hand decisions are made that harm them and others
If young Australian who are under the age of 21 are drinking alcohol, it is too soon, too much and too risky for them. Therefore, the legal drinking age in Australia should be 21 years of age. Something that many Australian have forgotten is that all Australian states had an age of 21 drinking law in the late 60s, and that law was reduced to 18. When the age was reduced, Australian actually started to experience the rising rates of youth alcohol problems and more deaths on the road. Alcohol can have toxic effects on young people 's body.
Today in the United States about 4,358 people under the age of 21 years old die each year from alcohol-related car crashes, homicides, suicides, alcohol poisoning, and other injuries such as falls, burns, and even drowning. More than 190,000 people under the age of 21 visited an emergency room for alcohol related reasons in 2008 alone. Alcohol related motor vehicle crashes kill someone every 31 minutes and non-fatally injure someone every two minutes. That’s a lot of people gone because they wanted to go out and party and not think about the consequences ahead. In this essay I’m gonna give you information to why Underage Drinking is very very bad for you.
Drunk driving seems to be a black spot of our civilization. An average of 17,000 individuals die each year in drunk driving related accidents, and drunk driving continues to be an enormously important public safety issue (MADD). With lowering this drinking age we can only expect more cases of drunk driving and more lives are put in danger. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration estimates that about 900 lives are saved annually due to fewer alcohol-related traffic crashes involving underage drivers. Surely, it should be a priority for the society to minimize the death toll from drunk driving.
“Every year 500,000 teens are injured in a car wreck. Every year 5,000 teens die in a car wreck meaning an average of 14 teens die a day. Car crashes are the No. 1 killer of teens in the U.S. Even more than alcohol and drug abuse, violence and suicide”. Teens are always excited to earn their license and drive out on the road for the first time, but not every time will be a success, it might also be their last.

However, “90% of drunk driving deaths in the United States were found in the over 21 age group” (Gruenewald). For this reason, drunk driving is not directly correlated with the drinking age. In addition, the percent of drunk driving deaths in the United States has reduced at a slower rate than European countries where they have their legal drinking age at eighteen. This suggest that if lowering the drinking age was a success in Europe, it may also be effective here in the United States to diminish the amount of drunk driving deaths. This is because people that become injured due to alcohol or alcohol poisoning are afraid to report their injuries to the hospital or authorities out of fear of illegal consequences for underage drinking.
In some countries, like in Europe the drinking age is set at 18. Even though people in the US think this is insane, this set age has more positive effects than people think it would. It is known that binge drinking is a problem in the US since it has the highest rate in the world for binge drinking. In Europe, teenagers get their license at age 18, and some drinking ages are lower than that, they figure out how to control their drinking before the drive. Unlike in the US, kids drink and then drive because they either have to be home by curfew or they are too scared to call their parents for a ride, and admit they had been under the
Despite the strict sanctions placed to curb it, drunk driving continues to be an unwavering predicament in most states. The number of offenders taken to custody by the police is rising by the day; with matters being made worse by the escalating number of underage drinkers. Many solutions have been put forth in an effort to reduce drunk driving and consequently reduce the number of road carnages. The persistence of the problem however calls for improved solutions. This paper forms a discussion on drunk driving and current prevention strategies; and proposes solutions to the unrelenting problem.
Americans know the dangers of getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. When alcohol enters the human body it impairs your judgement. Your speech begins to slur, the overall control you have on your body vanish because your balance and flow are altered by the alcohol entering your bloodstream. But yet the court systems lets them off with a simple slap on the wrist , like a mother to a child. What happens when that “first time offender” , loses their sense of knowledge of how to drive a car.
In fact, the law may increase the amount of eighteen to twenty year olds who do drink. It has been shown that, especially in college-age students, there is a tendency to not do what they are told, on the contrary, they will do the exact opposite. The problem with the drinking age being twenty-one is that some students drink purely out of defiance). The number of fatalities is down in all age groups, not just teenagers, and cars driven now are much safer than the cars that were being driven in the early 1980’s, and teenagers are much safer drivers, which can be attributed to the decreased amount of fatalities. Also, in other countries that have lower drinking ages, the number of fatalities has

One of the greatest death causes while driving for many years was because of individuals driving under the influence of alcohol. However, alcohol is no longer the only reason why so many deaths are being caused out in the streets while driving. Society is so consumed by this one thing that even while driving it cannot wait. Those who are driving do not understand the danger they put themselves and others in when they give their attention away from the road and everything around them. This small device in the hands of people while driving has caused many deaths in our world.
