2. How do the United States ' definitions of organized crime and those of other countries differ? How are they alike?
Organized crime has been defined in many different ways around the globe. The definition varies from country to country while at times it might even vary from state to state. For example in United States of America we find many different laws for the Organized Crime as we travel through the different states. There is a general similarity in all the definitions found but there are also certain differences where sometimes, some definitions clearly narrow down to all the kinds of businesses which are considered to be organized crimes while others just give a generalized idea. So the main focus of the definition of the organized crime stays with that particular kind of crime. We get a more comprehensive definition of organized crimes if we merge all the definitions given by the states together. The definitions from United States are more detailed as they talk about the non-ideological motives, corruption, immunity, international operations, the long periods of time and the way legal businesses are used to mask the illegal activities. Organized crime is one of my favorite categories to watch because it’s an empire that earns illegal money. Usually the money is earned through prostitution, gambling, bootlegging, and robberies. I believe this is an excellent subject to research because it’s very interesting and I’ve always wanted to be a member of a mafia group during the 1950’s. Al Capone known as one the most famous leaders, he lead the Chicago Outfit, which is the city I live in.
The American Mafia was a crime network organization. The Sicilian Mafia in Italy was under attack from Benito Mussolini and his regime. Some Sicilian Mafia men managed to escape to the United States, where they started bootlegging and became well known as the American Mafia. The definition of organized crime is “a group of individuals working together to illicit profit through illegal and often violent methods”which during the 1920’s, organized crime was becoming more prevalent which had a huge impact on people in these cities where it was happening. Major gangsters like Al capone, Bonnie and clyde, or baby face nelson were Bowman 2 notorious for robbing banks, killing civilians or just causing mayhem in the streets by having wars with other gangs. Throughout history, the actions of the mafia have had an affect on the way the United States is today. The immigration of both Irish and Italian gangsters led to high amount crime throughout the 1900’s. These gangsters thrived in all kinds of illegal activities in hope for gaining profits. These illegal activities included the trading of narcotics, prostitution, labor union racketeering gambling, and certain legal enterprises, such as construction and trucking (“Mafia”).
