One of the advantages of watching movie in class as teaching method is the teachers can improve their students’ vocabulary. The teachers can have a movie in class with the English subtitles. So that, students can know the words or sentences they heard in that movie. According to Xhemaili, M. (2003) the students will hear some words that are repeated many times. As a result, the students will remember that words.
Basically, most of the students are interested to be involved in the activity of appreciating a literary work, however, some results of their works show that they need some more interesting and attractive instructional media in the process of learning. It can be said that to some parts of literary works the students should be introduced to some media of electronic, such as: movie, DVD, VCD. Therefore, this research attempted to apply a new medium in their literary class, which is a movie. This research focused on how the students’ ability in order to appreciate a movie. Metz (1971) explains that “a movie is a particular movie message which has its own beginning and ending, and movie in general designates one or more specific messages proper to all movies”.
On a previous research by Rule and Auge (2005), he found out that students prefer cartoon in language learning since Cartoon create an atmosphere that causes a high degree of motivation. Regarding on their research, the linguists debated that students who use movies can improve different language skills and achieve higher test scores. In my research, there are many similarities between Rule and Auge's views and my research proposal. We both see some ways are more exciting when we learn English from cartoons; it is motivating and enjoyable, far away from traditional methods like books or classes' courses, which cause boring quickly. Moreover, no doubt that the children who watch cartoons more superior than others do.
Animated films have been studied by researchers and scholars for years as these are one of the major sources of entertainment not only for children but for adults as well. It is believed that animated films are “good” for children as these types of movies stimulate imagination apart from providing amusement but, the truth is they do more than simply entertaining. In most cases, these films play the role of cultural authority to determine the definition of values and morals. Children learn more from what they watch which makes it very important for parents and educators to pay close attention at the content and features of these films. Children no longer learn only from books, they also prefer learning from varied forms of popular culture.
