Students use different study methods and study in different environments. Majority of students in this century study with background music. According to Rudy Miller (2015) who holds her masters’ degree in English and arts, 53% of students multitask while studying and 87% of those students chose to listen to music. Countless research has tried to prove the question of whether or not listening to music while studying helps students absorb more information and do well in school or if it distracts them causing their marks to be lower. All the previous research done has come out with a different result/conclusion. This study will be to determine the effect of Hip-Hop music on students’ memory. This experiment is of an importance since there is a …show more content…

A study conducted by Furnham, and McClelland (2011) tested the effects of background music which could be normal noises and/or music. After the experiment was conducted they came to a conclusion that background noises such as music do not benefit students in helping them memorize information and performing well in the test. Referring back to the hypothesis; music, background noise or any other form of distractions do not benefit people in memorizing/concentrating on what is required from them. This source is seen as valid source since it proves the hypothesis although there were some differences such as they performed the experiment with normal noises and some background music whereas the aim of this experiment is to prove that listening to hip- hop music while studying is a distraction and the people who did the experiment are still studying towards their
Hip-Hop When one hears the word, “hip-hop”, images of money, drugs, violence, and provocative dancing instantly arise. Once someone hears the loud hip-hop music blasting out of a teenager’s room, they immediately criticize them for listening to what they call “nonsense”. Despite some people’s inherent distaste of hip-hop, this genre of music is actually sending an incredibly enriching and influential message. In “Hip-Hop and Shakespeare”, a TED talk, Akala, the speaker, argues that hip-hop motivates people to be intelligent and successful.
Academic performance and listening to a certain type of music does not affect one another. Listening to Hip Hop is some students ways of trying to fit in with a certain group of friends. " The common assumption is that teens who dress in a certain way or act tough are in gangs or aspire to lives outside mainstream society, but when you talk with them, you discover that the way they dress or challenge authority in class often doesn't mean that at all” (Blagg). Among teenagers, listening to a certain type of music and dressing a certain way portrays a message, but that message doesn’t correlate with academic performance.
“Teens who spend more time watching the sex and violence depicted in… rap music videos are more likely to practice these behaviors in real life..” says Sid Kirchheimer in “Does Rap Put Teens at Risk?”. There has been a great deal of controversy over whether or not rap music is harmful. Some say that gangster music will put teens (children, adults, etc.) at risk of doing destructive activities featured in the music videos, while on the other hand, some say that hip-hop music can help people with mental illnesses and depression in a positive way. Rap music puts people at risk because of the disastrous activities it leads people to do and the future generations to come.
Another example can be seen by Sharon Begley’s July 24 issue of Science and Technology in which she stated that listening to music starting at a young age helps a child do better in math and science. Again, others might claim that music education in school is a “waste of money and time”. This statement can be contradicted by researcher MIT professor Jeanne Bamberge. Bamberge claims that because of music, children are able to listen and learn better and faster than those who aren’t blessed with music educations. In addition, music increases students’ abilities to listen and learn.
Rap music has negative influences on teenagers and youth lives, as they are drawn to the lifestyle of drugs, sex, and violence, which is contained in the music lyrics and videos. Research has supported this, arguing that exposure for a long time to this music is likely to affect the overall mood, behavior, perceptions, and create fantasies among the youths (Miranda and Claes, 2004). This has had significant influences on their behaviors at school and at home. Parents are concerned, since they are unaware of the lyrics, as the teenagers prefer to download the songs and listen the music through the headphones. Research has proven that popular rap music effects explore the student schoolwork, social interactions, moods, and overall behavior.
The Impact of Hip-Hop Ever since its birth in the 1970s in West Bronx, Hip Hop has been known as “Gangsta” music and most commonly associated with black culture. Since its creation it has become a fast growing genre of music and has growing fame all over the world. The popularity of it has increased to all races, age and gender. However the growing popularity of hip hop has come with several controversies among scholars. Some scholars argue that the growing popularity of the genre is very helpful to low income families who can use this as their outlet into going to Universities, on the other side some believe associating the genre to black culture is bad for the culture as a whole and they should not be associated together.
Hip-hop culture has been the topic of various academic, social, and political discourses. Rap music, in particular, has made its way to mainstream media which is evident in the numerous films and movies that centers on what was once a part of an underground culture. Scholars explain that the popularity of hip-hop in both music and films are partly due to its potential to disseminate information, address an issue, and promote social change. Tinson and McBride (2013), for example, note that hip-hop is a “…form of critical education at the intersection of, and inseparable from political engagement” (1). Scholars further note that hip-hop’s current state “…requires frequent accounting of its engagement with the social, political, and cultural climate
Since, music is considerable as the useful tool and it makes things seems easier for people just by listening to it while concentrating or working on things. It is obvious that music is the best tool in relieving from stress and one study shows that music improves the performance of people at their work or children in school more effectively compared to their performance without music. Music does not just relaxing people but there are many benefits on the development of children with their brain, behavior, intellectual and cognitive that leads children to grow further than they could without music (Silberg, n.d.). This topic was interesting to work and conduct researches on because
This is far from the truth. For one, music doesn’t cause any changes to your brain that “make you smarter”. A Harvard University study finds that the widely accepted claim of “Music makes you smarter” is actually false, because the cognitive benefit of music was either insignificant or non-existent. Boston college psychology professor Ellen Winner backs this up by saying that trying to justify music by saying it will make you good at math is misguided. This proves that the claim most commonly used by supporters of music classes holds very little water.
In our present day and age many people now listen to music while doing a number of various activities. There is a big debate whether listening to music benefits you and helps you to concentrate and focus especially while studying. I researched whether listening to music helps you concentrate and focus. Listening to music is one of the only activities which involve using both sides of the brain. When concentrating on a specific task you are normally only using one part of your brain while concentrating so the other parts of your brain that is unoccupied drifts off which causes you to lose concentration.
They suppose that listening to cheerful music would be a good idea. On the contrary studies have proven a correlation, which seems there is a some type of relief in listening to other people 's struggles, the demons they deal with and how they overcame them. "Hip-hop in general, and rap in particular, often carry messages that are much more composite therefore is not properly appreciated," This is what makes Hip hop an ideal medium for helping individuals understand their psychological problems and for finding ways to deal with
Do people ever stop and think that a certain song has changed their mood completely? One minute they were mad and the next they are sad. Or that music can help people with illnesses and disabilities. How music can affect the brain, emotions, memory and so much more. Music plays a key part in today’s society.
Results showed significant differences in social, cognitive and physical development preferring the children in the experimental group, this suggests that music can create a more relaxed learning
Some studies showed that people who listened to classical music performed worse in memory tests than those who didn’t” (See). We do know that some children and adults seem to be calmer and more engaged when music is incorporated into learning. People feel that this does impact the individual. Some people do not believe that arts in education are beneficial, but others feel that they are very monumental is
Listening to music gives humans huge amount of benefits towards their personal life. A lot of students listen to music to, help reduce stress, boost up their mood and provides motivation in their daily life. Music is an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and affection in significant forms through the components of rhythm, melody, harmony, and colour. Most of the student choose to listen to their favorite genre of music when they study or do their homework without understanding
