Culture refers to the “symbolic, instrumental and social responses of collectivities of people to their environment” (Brown, 1995: p.). In today’s Jamaican society, culture is influenced by varying degrees of factors, globalization being the primary one. Another factor is the ongoing process of cultural hybridization, rather than imperialism, technology along with cultural identity and formation. As a result of these factors “contemporary forms of cultural expression are more global than local or parochial” (Brown, 1995; p.). In a country like Jamaica that is driven by exports, globalization has introduced many cultural practices within the island. This is done through the different types of products and services that are introduced in the society. “Globalization is a process of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nations, a process driven by international trade and investment and aided by information technology” (What is globalization?” 2015).
Additionally, the process of globalization deeply affects the culture of societies as they are being introduced to popular culture of the West. The access to new products of culture such as music is a prime example of how cultural globalization is taking place. Globalization has also fostered an increase in “international trade in cultural products and services, such as movies, music, and publications.
