The English language had an enormous impact in Puerto Rico and it will be shown throughout a series of short stories by a man named Abelardo Diaz Alfaro. Abelardo was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, July 24, 1919, and died in San Juan, July 22, 1999. Once, he moved to Ponce due to, his father’s occupation, he studied art in high school with Miguel Pou. Not long after graduating high school, he studied and graduated the Polytechnic Institute in San German with a bachelor’s degree in art. Later on, he obtained a master’s in social work in the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras. Escalera had brought him in order for him to teach the english class. Peyo was troubled due to, never having taught english and was worried how the children would perceive the class. Regardless of being troubled he decided to give his class. Peyo always wanted the best for his students. His students have never heard, this so called english language and when Peyo began teaching they laughed at his attempt. After a short discussion in class, he asked a certain student how does the cock “sing” in english, the child thinking it is all a joke, he decided to make a joke also, and disrupted the class. In effect of the joke, Peyo noticed how indifferent the growing generation was being about learning english. Peyo of course has never agreed to the idea with implementing the language to the educational system because he thinks it is absurd. Now, he feels as if he has failed the children when he tried to teach english and could not because he has never given an english lesson. He was a farm worker, labor leader, and a civil rights activist, and he was also in the navy. He was born near Yuma, Arizona, on March 31, 1927. He fought for all the nationality farm workers to get them a better life. But that wasn’t easy, he fasted a million times, and marched many times.

Anzaldúa was a Mexican American who was a well-known writer and had a major impact on the fields of queer, feminist, and cultural theory. Her most famous work is Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza which includes poems, essays, and short stories. Anzaldúa was no stranger to the use of literary theories in her writing, which is evident in her short story “How to Tame a Wild Tongue.” Here, the author uses a combination of feminist, reader-response, and psychoanalytic theory to show the struggle of being oneself when they’re Mexican-American. Through the use of feminist theory, she explains how a female is labeled as an “habladora” when she tries to voice out her opinion about something; reader-response theory provides the reader with an understanding of the struggles of self-identity, which they are able to relate to, especially Mexican-Americans; and lastly, psychoanalytic theory illuminates on her childhood experiences, which could explain why Anzaldúa believes in what she does, such as the idea that Anglo people have tried to tame her tongue—in other words, her language.
Cofer addresses the cultural barriers and challenges that Latinos experience through emotional appeal, anecdotal imagery, parallelism and the use of effective periodic sentences. In her article, Cofer assesses the difficult cultural hurdles of Latin Americans with emotional appeal. She provides insight on her cultural barriers by first conveying the way she had to dress and her struggle, as it shows in this piece of text, “That morning I had organized… which to base my decision” (Cofer 5). This poignancy works to stress an agonizing feeling of uncertainty and restraint towards the author.
Rodriguez’s English was not the best, and because of that he would either be silent or quietly mumble when asked to participate by one of the nuns (73). Since his lack of participation was noticeable and showed little progress, some of his teachers visited Rodriguez’s home to ask his parents to “encourage your children to practice their English when they are home?” (73). Rodriguez one day walks in on his parents speaking Spanish, but when they see him they switch to English, which offends and over the days that follows angers him enough to decide to seriously learn English. In Julia Alvarez’s Antojos, is about a young Dominican American women named Yolanda who is visiting her homeland and family in search of her antojos or cravings which leads her to not only cultural confrontation between American and Dominican ways but being able to reconnect with her native identity.
