The English language had an enormous impact in Puerto Rico and it will be shown throughout a series of short stories by a man named Abelardo Diaz Alfaro. Abelardo was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, July 24, 1919, and died in San Juan, July 22, 1999. Once, he moved to Ponce due to, his father’s occupation, he studied art in high school with Miguel Pou. Not long after graduating high school, he studied and graduated the Polytechnic Institute in San German with a bachelor’s degree in art. Later on, he obtained a master’s in social work in the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras. Escalera had brought him in order for him to teach the english class. Peyo was troubled due to, never having taught english and was worried how the children would perceive the class. Regardless of being troubled he decided to give his class. Peyo always wanted the best for his students. His students have never heard, this so called english language and when Peyo began teaching they laughed at his attempt. After a short discussion in class, he asked a certain student how does the cock “sing” in english, the child thinking it is all a joke, he decided to make a joke also, and disrupted the class. In effect of the joke, Peyo noticed how indifferent the growing generation was being about learning english. Peyo of course has never agreed to the idea with implementing the language to the educational system because he thinks it is absurd. Now, he feels as if he has failed the children when he tried to teach english and could not because he has never given an english lesson.
