Transcendentalism is a highly competitive world of the market revolution which strongly encouraged the identification of American freedom without any restraints on people who were seeking financial improvement and personal development. It was a world in which regional developments along with the market revolution crushed traditional and social borders. For example moving from one place to another was a common characteristic of the American life. Transcendentalism believed in individual judgment over existing social traditions and institutions.

In Emerson's views, people should “not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail”(citation). Based on Emerson’s thoughts, people should not follow the crowd, but instead live their lives and leave their mark on the Earth. Emerson thoughts come from a philosophical movement of the nineteenth century called transcendentalism. Transcendentalism focuses on religious renewal, literary innovation, and social transformation (encyclopedia.com). Because of their belief that God exists in everyone and nature, and that knowledge comes from individual intuition, led to the highlight of individualism, self-reliance, and breaking free from traditions(citation). Transcendentalism is an American philosophy that revolves around self-reliance and independence, commonly in nature, a Transcendentalist wants to find the true meaning in life. I believe that Chris McCandless was a Transcendentalist because he was able to leave his whole life behind and take on a minimalist lifestyle while having a strong relationship with god. However, I believe that I am not a Transcendentalist, but simply an adventurer. I had the opportunity to go to Mexico and visit the Yucatan rainforest and this lead me to be able to explore nature and feel the peaceful impact it can have on someone 's life.

Transcendentalism is present in today’s culture in ways we do not even notice. It is in our music, television, and movies. These parts of today 's culture show free thought, nonconformity, and the role of nature.

Two American authors, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne, represent two sides of the same coin: Transcendentalism. Transcendentalism swept through America as a new worldview in the 1900’s. Transcendentalism is a philosophy that asserts the primacy of the spiritual and transcendental over the material, that deals with aspects of nature. Men committed their lives to the study of nature. Nature became a religion. Emerson, a transcendental optimist, claimed that each person is inherently good. Hawthorne, a transcendental pessimist, demanded that man was corrupt and inherently evil. The movie, The Incredibles, is a Disney film about a family of superheros trying to maintain their secret identities. They try to maintain ordinary, regular lives after the use of superpowers is suddenly banned by the government for the safety of their cities. All was well and fairly normal until their family was directly targeted by a new villain, Buddy Pine (aka. Syndrome). Despite their progress in the area of living normal lives, they’re throw in a series of tough situations that require the whole family to tap into who they truly are. The Incredibles is a fantastic example of transcendentalism due to the presence of both nonconformity and individualism.

Transcendentalism is about life in which nature and the soul connect. In the movie Dead Poet Society, one of the characters who shows transcendentalism in Neil Perry. In the movie the students quoted poems and had their alone time with nature. They also relied on themselves and sought the spiritual side of things. Throughout the movie, Neil went to a cave away from people. Furthermore, Neil’s friends joined him to have fun with the Dead Poets Society, a group Neil recreated after hearing that his professor, Mr. Keating, had been involved in when he was a student at Welton. Overall, Neil Perry was a great example of transcendentalism throughout the entire movie.

Transcendentalism is the belief that man is inherently good, is an independent thinker, and goes out into nature to get in touch with himself. Generally, man has good intentions and intends no harm unto others. In addition, man does not need society to give him and develop his thoughts, as he already has them within. To help bring out these already installed beliefs, man has the desire to go out into nature to get in touch with himself and find deeper notions within. In Ralph Waldo Emerson’s writings “Self Reliance” and “American Scholar”, he writes about how being a true individual means that one must have his own beliefs, and not copy someone else’s ideas. In addition, he believes that society is the antagonist, actively working against individuals.

I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life.” This meant that you live how you want to live and do whatever you want to be free from conformity in your life. This quote by Henry David Thoreau is what the Dead Poets Society and its members lived by everyday. The transcendentalist members always acted differently and disobeyed many so that they could follow in the footsteps of the original Dead Poets Society. In doing so the characters were punished for not conforming to both the school of Welton and their parents. In the movie many characters showed traits of transcendentalism, for example Neil Perry showed many signs of nonconformity towards his father by not listening to his command to become a doctor. Knox Overstreet showed during the film human potential by trying to believe in himself and trying to get a girl from another school. Finally Todd Anderson who experienced truth through observation by attending the Dead Poets meeting and later by joining the activities the Society does. If you look hard enough in any book,movie, or play you will always find some form of transcendentalism every single time and that will never change.

Transcendentalist emphasize a person’s individual freedoms and responsibilities, their connection to nature, and their spirituality. In the story Nature you can tell it is based on transcendentalism. “In the woods, too, a man casts off his years, as the snake his slough and at what period soever of life is always a child. In the woods is perpetual youth.” (Emerson, p. 367) In Nature, it thought that nature makes you feel young and well. Transcendentalism is a major romantic movement during the 19th century. It was a period of romance where people learned to love themselves. The poem Self-Reliance, is by Ralph Waldo Emerson. In this excerpt, he emphasizes the traits of being a transcendentalist. The selection Tia Chucha, is by Luis Rodriguez. In the poem, she gossips about her aunt Chucha and her unique personalities. The anecdote Gary Keillor, is by Garrison Keillor. It is about a boy named Gary, who joins a school talent show and encounters many obstacles, both mentally and socially. Transcendentalism is an appealing philosophy because it encourages individuals to rely on themselves, to ignore other’s accusations, and to accept one’s unique place.

Transcendentalists were a movement of this time that had both its ups and downs. In other words failure and successes. When it comes to reform movements the things most people really care about is the success of it and if it made any real change to people during the time period. Transcendentalism had an effect on people of the time that really started something completely unheard of and misunderstood. What transcendentalists did was take what was known and look far beyond it. Through literature, speeches, and even teaches that took place in classrooms of the time, people were fascinated and curious about what they were spreading and practicing. “Where I Lived and What I Lived For” was written in 1854 by Hendry David Thoreau, subsuming Transcendentalist beliefs of the time period. Thoreau writes in a first-person existential narrative, reflecting on prior events in life and the propriety of said decisions. This narrative style affirms his beliefs of: elected seclusion, dissatisfaction of civilization, imperative of self-reliance, and the value of nature. Over a hundred and fifty years later, ideals highly regarded by Thoreau and the Transcendentalist of the time are still ever present in modern-American media. Wall-E, a Pixar animated film written by Andrew Stanton, tells a story of a robot name Wall-E, whose sole purpose is to clean up and condense the trash on an unoccupied-waste-covered Earth. In this science fiction comedy, Wall-E follows a robot named Eve (Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator) designed to retrieve any signs of plant life on earth, delivering it to a space station inhabited by overweight-technology-dependent human beings. Throughout the movie humans become self-reliant, rebelling from the artificially intelligent robots on the ship, leading them to discover the importance of nature and the outside world.

What is transcendentalism? It is a very fancy word for a very simple idea. Transcendentalism is a philosophy where a person’s reality is built off intuition instead of logic. Transcendentalists live their lives with as few materialistic items as possible and block out what society describes as acceptable for what a human should do with their life. Their intuitive knowledge “Transcends” or goes beyond their five senses. Transcendentalists’ dive into art and nature in order to figure out their purpose on Earth.
