She studied under Ann Preston, the first female dean of Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, during Cole’s time there. The primary issue that several people had with her work was her duty as a sanitary visitor. Some did not see the purpose of having a sanitary visitor since he/she would not be providing the poor with the tools they need instead just informing them on how to stay sanitary. In the late 19th century, first effort was made to improve MCH services in India through establishment for training of Dais in Amritsar in 1880. The Sokhey Committee (1938) also recommended state supported and integrated preventive, promotive, and curative health care services for pregnant and lactating women in a three tier organisational structure for maternal health at the district level. Florence choose to take a different path. Florence was an important leader and left a legacy for multiple reasons, the most noticed are that she helped in the Crimean war, cared for her patients, and advanced modern medicine. Florence was best known for her work in the Crimean war. For instance, an article about Florence on NCBI stated that during the Crimean War, she took 38 nurses to the war hospital and worked to heal the wounded soldiers. Furthermore, Biography.com states, “During the Crimean War, she and a team of nurses improved the unsanitary conditions at a British base hospital, reducing the death count by two-thirds.” Marjie Bloy wrote “Nightingale offered her services to the War Office on 14 October but her friend Sidney Herbert — the Secretary for War — already had written to her, suggesting that she should go out to the Crimea.” All of these quotes state that she went to help in the hospital in the Crimean war.
Contrarily, some have been observed as cornerstones and agreed upon by the masses in the nursing profession and accepted into practice by generations of nurses. Most theories are just a problem solving approach. As a graduate student Sister Callista Roy was challenged by her professors to develop a conceptual model for nursing practice (Vera, 2014). Roy knew that including mental concepts into her framework meant that her model would have to be adaptable, in order to give each person individualized care based on their needs. Sister Callista Roy was a firm believer that nursing was a service to society which provided the ground work for her theory of the Adaptation Model of Nursing (Vera, 2014).

However, women were not considered for the battlefield because most of them would be needed as nurses for wounded soldiers.
