Cultures of Family In many cultures, the family is the most important group of people you will ever have. Every decision is based upon the idea of whether or not it will benefit your family or due harm to the family. This is practically identical to the idea of that of The Godfather, which is portrayed within the family of the Corleone. Don Vito Corleone, Sonny Corleone, Tom Hagen, and Michael Corleone were the ones who predominately portrayed this idea in the film. Don Vito displays the struggle of maintaining the role of the family and the role of the Don, while Sonny displays the importance of family. Tom Hagen portrays the dissonance between the outsider and a close advisor to the family. Michael symbolically represents the prodigal son, to a certain extent, which will be explained later in this essay.
Vito Corleone Don Vito Corleone sets up the beginning scene and displays the importance of family and respect, relating to family. A man comes to the Don asking for a request. The implicit request is determined to be that a certain group that have dishonored his family should be "taken care of". Don Corleone responds with a very memorable quote saying, “You come to me on the day that my daughter is to be married, and you ask me to do murder for money?” (Ruddy & Coppola 1972).
