This is an example of an idiom used in chapter 7, The Governor 's Hall. This isn’t supposed to be taken literally, but it is used to describe to the reader the light of innocence inside Pearl. The fire represents that light which is seen in and throughout her small body. She is considered by many to be a devil child with this light shining through her. The second part of the quote describes how Hester did not know in the moment of her crime that Pearl would be the consequence. She has pretty much ruined her reputation and integrity by doing such a terrible act. Now, Pearl is the only thing sunshine in her life that she can go to and spend time raising.
