CHAPTER TWO
2.0 Rodents
Grasscutter
The grasscutter (Thryonomys swinderianus) is a wild herbivore rodent belongs to one of the two species of Cane rats, a small family of African hystricognath rodents are exploited in most areas as a source of animal protein (Asibey, 1974; NRC, 1991).
Within the West African sub-region, the grasscutter is the most preferred bushmeat species and the most bushmeat sold in markets and by most people in Ghana and other countries within the sub-region prefer grasscutter meat to beef. It is also a source of livelihood for people in the grasscutter production, hunters and market seller (Asibey, 1974; Baptist & Mensah, 1986; Ntiamoa-Baidu, 1987; Centre for Biodiversity Utilization and Development, 2004).

Because of its tasty meat – appreciated by all, regardless of ethnic inchoation or religion – grasscutters have been hunted locally to the point of extinction. For that reason, farmers have become fascinated with raising them in their backyards. Developing techniques for domestication and rearing of some of the heavily hunted wild animal species is a sensible way to engender protein-affluent victuals for incrementing human populations. Wild grasscutters bought from hunters need special care after arriving at the farm. For domestication the grasscutter farmer should provide kindred conditions as in the wild. Their immediate environment should be shaded and quiet without other animals or people around. Victualing and handling should be done on a customary substructure and by the same people, so the animals become habituated to their attendants. The cage should be plenarily stocked with grasses afore an incipiently acquired, wild animal is put into it. This obviates the animal from injury itself as a result of running and hitting its head against the sides of the cage. Truculent males should be paired with matured tamed female(s), which are yare to be crossed and vice versa. Feeding incipient, wild grasscutters with sugar cane, cube sugar and salted …show more content…
Cane rat meat popularly called bush meat is highly acceptable in Nigeria, Ghana. Domestication of grasscutter is a relatively novel practice in Nigeria with its potentialities, challenges and opportunities (Owen and Dike, 2012). Grasscutter farming has gregarious acceptability, good meat quality of high biological value (high protein and low fat), inexpensive victuals and amenability to captive rearing, good litter size and short generation interval. Despite the challenges of domestication of grasscutter, non-steady supply of the meat, air pollution and ecological devastation as a result of bush burning to hunt cane rats and threat to extinction of grasscutter; the domestication and engenderment of grasscutter is another dimension in the livestock industry that has the potential to ascertain customary and sustainable animal engenderment in the nation (Owen and Dike, 2012; Aluko, et al.,
In the articles “An Animals Place,” by Michael Pollan, and “The Omnivore’s Delusion: Against the Agri-intellectuals,” by Blake Hurst, the controversial methods of farming in today’s society are examined. Modern farming methods are a relevant topic of discussion because the foods that people consume have a direct impact on their health, therefore they should be aware of the procedures that farming methods employ. Pollan and Hurst have differing beliefs on farming methods, but similar interests in the environment, people, and animals. In the article “An Animals Place,” the author, Michael Pollan sheds light on the barbaric institution of American meat-packing.
Following Michael Pollan’s view in his book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma, he covers the realm of concentrated animal feedlot operations (COFAs) in his extensive spiel about the overarching concept of corn in our society. He discusses his purchased steer, number 534, as he accompanies its journey through the system. In the beginning 534 enjoyed his life on a green pasture with his mother for six months, until he became strong and bulky enough to get a change of scenery. He was then transferred to a lovely place called a backgrounding pen; where 534 learned to live in a pen, eat from a trough, and to consume a new diet. Pollan’s observational study lead him to find many complications regarding COFAs and their effect on the environment.
Cheap food, No time! The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan introduces 3 main topics; Industrial Corn, Pastoral Grass, and Personal The Forest. In these topics Pollan portrays in depth descriptions of each. Within these sections Pollan gets creative.
Animals are more than just a Profit In the United States today the killing of animals is in an accelerated growth and dispute in society. The current issue has always been a dilemma in America, but recently more and more food production companies have been getting exposed. Steven Rinella in American Buffalo have shared some valid themes from his viewpoint of being a hunter. He focuses on how the buffalo animal have become the national culture, history up to present, and education for him. Rinella fundamental intention is to expound and inform our human race that some hunters are not all about making their next dollar.

Locavores are misinformed idealist who believe in changing the world by eating locally. They believe by eating locally, they are improving their carbon footprint, help the local economy, and creating a more nutritional diet. However, locavores are ignorant of many situations such as many people’s lives depend on trade and that many places are not suitable for farming. Even though a locavore’s heart is heading in the right direction, but their efforts are misguided.
The Jungle is a fictional novel based on the indiscretions within the meat industry, but there are instances in which the author is giving the subtle truth. For instance, Sinclair insinuates the existence of poisoned rats being mixed into our food, filling the reader with newfound suspicions that the meat we are eating is not as it seems (Sinclair 143). The facts shown to the reader forces them to acknowledge the dangers of trusting the meat industry and pushes their bias towards a healthier lifestyle. In addition to Sinclair’s hints, Pollan displays the industry’s apathy towards the prevention of life-threatening diseases when he states that nearly 80% of the E. coli found in cows’ newly-acidic stomach can disperse if they were fed grass 5 days before slaughter (Pollan 82). This shows the reader the industry’s care for profit rather than their well-being, and it has the potential to cause the reader to have a negative bias towards the food
Throughout history, there appears to be a correlation between population growth and technological advances as it relates to the acquisition of the meat for consumption. Currently, convenience and ease
“Today, many listeners think of bluegrass as an ancient mountain tradition that dates back to some primitive time in Appalachian history” (Neal, 127). However, bluegrass emerged after World War II, continuing to energize the world of country music through bluegrass artists such as Del McCoury and David Grisman (Neal, 127). Mandolinist, David Grisman and rhythm guitarist Del McCoury, first met each other while Del played banjo for infamous bluegrass artist, Bill Monroe in 1963 (Kang, 15). Over the years, the two continued to play together, eventually forming their show duet, Songs and Stories, featured on November 14, 2015 at UNC-Chapel Hill’s Memorial Hall. As a result, the duet of Del McCoury and David Grisman represent the traditional style
In fact, the animals are often stored in small cages or spaces with barley any room to move, many will catch a disease from their poor quality of living. Social interaction is crucial because the animals become tired of the same environment, this leads to aggression. To control the aggression, animals are often pumped with drugs. Often, if an animal is sick there will be no veterinary help because of the high cost that is required, as a result, cattle have died from dehydration or other reasons regarding the lack of care. Because the animals are seen as a profit they are bred in a way that is convenient for the slaughterhouse.
The consumption of red meat has increased significantly in recent years. The link between red meat consumption and climate change is greatly evident. Therefore, this issue may be considered positive for various stakeholders, while also having a negative impact on others. Not only is the consumption of meat a major contributor to climate change, but the production of the meat consumed influences the climate as well. Livestock produces a considerable amount of greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide, which accounts for more than 18% of greenhouse gas emissions.
According to Upton Sinclair’s, “The Jungle,”numerous types of meats were mixed together with no discretion. There were meats that were sold even after rotting, the meat covered in white mold. Meats were injected with toxic preservatives and chemicals. Meat was left on the ground, trampled and spit on and still sold. Rats, poop, dust, leaky roof water were all things that came into contact with the produced meat.
In today’s world, there is a division among the people in the world regarding whether or not it is ethical to eat meat. After researching about eating meat and vegetarianism, I have come to the conclusion that it is indeed ethical to eat meat in today’s society. Sure, eating meat might have its drawbacks, but I have found that the benefits of eating meat far outweigh the negatives of eating it. Eating meat not only helps improve people’s health, but it also helps strengthen our economy and it has little difference in the environmental impact that involves in the farming of vegetables. Eating too much of anything usually results in a negative outcome.
The meat packing industry disregards animal’s emotions and their rights all together by the malicious treatment of animals. The way animals are being treated is highly unfair. Being slaughtered for their body parts and suffering just to be used for protein or an asset to humans is unbearable. An animal’s life is at equal values to a human and deserve the same rights as
Promoting good animal welfare as part of food quality Animal welfare is very important also for us humans, for our own health, nutrition and security when eating animals. Many times you can diagnose animal welfare when studying their behavior, physiology productivity and reproductive success. Sometimes productivity is a way to know the animal’s health.
