Everybody in the world has their own individual interpretation of the "American Dream" based on what they want to accomplish in life. Even though everyone has this thought of their dream in mind, is this even a possibility for people to accomplish in our Country? Everyone has their own dreams and aspirations but no one evers feels satisfied. They want more and more so no one feels like they can accomplish everything. In the time period that this book was written in, which is the 1920's, the American Dream is more of a dream than something that is realistic and can be accomplished, something people just talk about. People who are born into wealth or popularity based on their family members are looked on as better then others who were not no …show more content…
Specifically, Nick says: “He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward – and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away.” (Fitzgerald 21-22). This quote shows how Nick realizes that even though people seem like they have everything they want it is always something missing, the American dream can represent the green light in different peoples lives through money, dreams, or aspirations. Another quote that helps show this is: “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy--they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made…” (Fitzgerald 179) This allowed Nick to see that the American Dream was not everything it seemed it corrupted people and people who accomplished this “Dream” were not always good people doing good …show more content…
Nick talks about Gatsby’s past and says:.“[Gatsby’s] parents were shiftless and unsuccessful farm people… For over a year he had been beating his way along the south shore of Lake Superior as a clam-digger and a salmon fisher or in any other capacity that brought him food and a bed” (98) This shows the beginning of Gatsby’s life and where he started to where he is now with all the wealth and prosperity he has accumulated and how he was able to get there.Another quote that proves this point is:”He talked a lot about the past, and I gathered that he wanted to recover something, some idea of himself perhaps, that had gone into loving Daisy‖ (110, 111). This gives a great example on how Jay Gatsby is stuck in the past and is still wanting something to happen in order for him to complete his dream even with all his other
Paul Glader, a modern writer, says the American dream is now all about money. Money is our future and all any individual thinks about. Money is what will give us the perfect life, regardless what one does to achieve that money. When comparing Fitzgerald’s and Glader’s ideas on the American

Scott Fitzgerald once said "America's great promise is that something is going to happen, and after a while you get tired of waiting because nothing happens to people except that they grow old and nothing happens to American art because America is the story of the moon that never rose...". The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald connects to this quote and portrays a strong demand for the American Dream that seems to only cause dissatisfaction. Jay Gatsby has struggled to reach and grasp the dream he wishes for and can't accept what is really going on in his life. His dream contains wealth and high standard living to get with Daisy Buchanan who he claims to be his true love throughout the novel. Every part of Gatsby's dream is symbolized by the green light on the dock of Daisy's home.
At the beginning of the book we find out that Gatsby is Nick's next door neighbor and Nick wants to learn more about the mysteries of Gatsby. Daisy made it a point to explain “I wish we could just run away. ”even
However “left my young man's illusions long behind me” suggests that he was disillusioned in his blind chase for money and now has a more realistic view of the world, meaning he shot for the stars but did not make it which is also a major fact of the American Dream is not everybody is going to make it which is why many will warn you away from it. Sometimes loved ones and friends don't understand the appeal of chasing the American Dream. Anne Marie describes how Nick is “from the "Middle West. [and] After graduating from Yale, Nick decided to go east and learn the bond business, with the "grave, hesitant" approval of his "aunts and uncles" and the financial support of his father”. This quote from the article highlights how one must do things despite the opinions of others in order to be successful and achieve one's goals.
There are many reasons why a person would want to pretend like someone they are not. It could be for shame, fear, or pride, it could be for any reason. However, the real question is, is this worth it? The novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald deeply critiques the masks people put on during the 1920s just for the sole purpose of fitting in to society, which mostly consists of wealthy people. With this, comes the superficiality of them and the situation they are in.
he lies and betrayal all due to his obsession with Daisy lead James Gatz into a downward spiral. His illegal and morally wrong actions in an attempt to be with Daisy transform him into a corrupt antagonist. In The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Gatz is not truly a great man who commits illegal acts out of delusion and lies to himself and others.
“The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange it for.” This is a quote said by Henry David Thoreau, which highlights the effects of materialism on lives. Stating that one has greed for money will only end in the loss of their soul and happiness. The Great Gatsby is a classic novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The novel showcases wealth and materialism through the life built by the main character, Gatsby.

The American Dream is known to most as the pursuit of wealth and success through hard work. In the first paragraph of the passage, Fitzgerald describes his own idea of the American Dream. Gatsby Isn’t Who He Seems In this book, The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald uses detail to make Gatsby to make him not who he seems. Details including events at his parties that make Gatsby seem suspicious, and details in Gatsby’s “life story” when him and Nick were driving. Events at the party made Gatsby a bit suspicious. At the party in chapter three, two girls and Jordan were talking and one of the girls said that they heard that Gatsby has killed a man, but the other girl said he wouldn’t go that far (44).
The self-made man is a paragon of virtue and is often paralleled with the idea of a meritocracy. In his novel The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald challenges the reality of the American dream through Nick Carraway, a fairly well off young man with no tangible end goal in life. Since Nick does not have a real dream, he compares the many dreamers in his life to the ideal self-made man. The American dream can be defined as a ‘rags-to-riches’ story, where a self-made man virtuously amasses unlimited success and wealth. Fitzgerald believes that upward class mobility is impossible without help and fraud, and describes three factions of people to disprove the American myth of the self-made man.
