The third chapter from the novel the Great Gatsby, in my opinion deserves the title “The Man behind the Myths” due to the many rumors and stories circling him and his ghost like appearances at his parties. Due to the narrator's, Nick, description of Gatsby and his actions during this chapter should be given this name. Throughout this chapter Nick speaks with and overhears many rumors about the party host, Gatsby. Not many people really know he is because he remains hidden within the abundant crowd which consumes his property.

The Great Gatsby is set in New York during the early 1920’s before the Wall Street crash, not long after the first World War. Many of the American soldiers did not get home for a long time after the official end due to them helping to rebuild the rest of the world. As we learn Nick is long home from the war himself before moving in next door to Jay Gatsby on West Egg. Nick’s old friend Tom and cousin Daisy live across the body of water on East Egg, where the ‘old money’ lives. East and West Egg are based on the Great Neck and Port Washington peninsulas on Long Island.
F. Scott Fitzgerald was born on September 24, 1896, in St. Paul, Minnesota and died December 21, 1940, in Hollywood, California. Growing up, his father, Edward Fitzgerald, was a salesman for Procter & Gamble which caused his family to move back and forth between Buffalo and Syracuse, New York until Fitzgerald was twelve. In 1908, Fitzgerald’s father lost his job so they moved back to St. Paul and lived off of his mother’s, Mary McQuillan’s, inheritance. As a child, Fitzgerald was wise and his parents were proud of him. An article published by A&E Network says, “Fitzgerald was a bright, handsome and ambitious boy.”

The novel is comprised of everything which can be described as the “roar” of his era: money, ambition, crime, rebellion, and greed. All representing the “Jazz Age”. The story takes place in the middle summer of 1922, when Nick Carraway – who’s perspective is used throughout the book – moves to West Egg on Long Island, New York.
