Gatsby Thematic Essay In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, lots of connections are drawn through various thematic subjects presented in this novel. One of these connections is between love, wealth, and social status, which are all very prominent subjects within The Great Gatsby. The relationships between various characters within the pages of this written work make one message very apparent: Love can be regarded as flimsy and deceitful when it is dictated by one’s wealth and social status.
Gatsby possesses a tendency to imbue meaning into objects and people that simply don’t exist. He imagines his love interest, Daisy, as more of a concept than a human being, creating a symbol out of her. I find that many people, myself included, suffer from making symbols of people. These insights combined with the novel’s short, simple, yet rhythmic writing style make The Great Gatsby my must recommend novel for

I believe the first time I read F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby was when I was in high school. The novel was never assigned or studied in any of my English classes and so, out of sheer curiosity because I knew it was considered a literary masterpiece, I decided to read it for my own pleasure. The only information I had about Gatsby was that it was set during the 1920s and that it was an American classic.
The book is set in New York City in two areas known as “East egg” and the “West Egg”. The time period was in the roaring twenties after World War 1. The importance of the setting is that this was in the twenties so there was definitely a social class difference and also female dependence on men. The West Egg and East Egg are the most important places because they symbolize old wealth (which is Daisy and Tom) and new (which is Gatsby). It shows differences with society and people and how Daisy and Jay were in different worlds.
