Indian Meat Industry
India’s meat production is estimated at 6.3 million tones, standing 5th in rank of world’s meat production and accounts for about 3 percent of the total world meat production of 220 million tones. The contribution by sheep, cattle, goats, poultry and pigs is 5 percent, 31 percent, 10 percent, 11 percent and 10 percent respectively. Buffalo in India contribute about 31 percent of the total meat production. The share of red meat is 77 percent.
Halal meat has got huge demand, the market for which is growing rapidly throughout the world, specifically in the Middle East. Besides India, Brazil, America and Australia have substantial market share in Halal meat industry. Halal meat by-products in India include Casings, Crushed Bone Grist, Gelatin, Sausages, leather and other products.

India is set to become world 's largest meat exporter. Indian Halal buffalo meat demand is increasing continuously because of its near-organic nature and lean character.

It is helping the industry in setting up and modernizing abattoirs by providing technical consultancy for production of hygienic meat and meat products and for utilization of slaughterhouse wastes to prepare animal by products with value addition. Setting up quality control and analytical laboratories for meat and meat products to meet the required domestic and international market standards are being undertaken. Meat producers and entrepreneurs are being promoted and trained to adopt Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HACCP), ISO-22000 in meat production. Market surveys are undertaken to help the industry to create market intelligence, data base and its dissemination on regular basis for improvement of the meat
