The History of Conflict Resolution is an article written by John W. Burton in the book titled “INTERNATIONAL CONFLICT RESOLUTION: Theory and Practice” written by Edward E. Azar and John W. Burton. Conflict resolution is the process of solving conflicts by a third party not involved in the conflict. These processes include mediation, negotiation, and arbitration which are carried out internationally in the context of international conflict resolutions, where parties involve are sovereign states having to breach international law. International peace conferences or conventions held in the past give good and previously implemented methods on how to make decisions in conflict resolution or allowing participants to speak the same language and that is problem solving (Azar & Burton, 1986). Also looking at history of actual events that have occurred might allow a third party to make decisions or conflicting parties to avoid violent conflict. Furthermore, there are also many other ways apart from the ones mentioned earlier like the use and recognition of adequate institutions available for states to use are continuously neglected. The author suggests that institutions are there for states to intentionally use, like the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and International Criminal Court, to allow collective decisions from a third party. Most states neglect the importance of these institutions and face to face situations where within charters are mediation, negotiation, judicial settlement and conciliation processes are provided in detail where positively unexpected discoveries will be made. For students studying peace and conflict, most parts of the article gives clear basic approaches to consider in problem solving analysis to conflict resolution in theory. The article also talks about the need for understanding and preparedness for changes in problem solving approaches due to development of institutions and globalization, where one must have a variety of knowledge to give effective inputs in solving disputes to create a win-win
