During disparate times like world war 2 and the terrorist attack of New York in September 11. people will always be looking for answers and hope, and photographs serve as a source of hope and information for everyone around the world.
Margaret Bourke-White was born on June 24,1904, to Joseph and Minnie White in Bronx, New York. As a young child Margaret was brought into this world as one of the white’s three offspring. Her father was an engineer who valued photography and all that it could capture; whereas, her mother defied stereotypes and became one of the few women ,during that time, to have an education. Graduating from Plainfield High School in Union City, Bourke disregarded her photographic interests and attended Columbia university to study herpetology. There was a brief lapse in time where Bourke showed no interest in photography after her father’s passing in 1922.
The introduction of photography during the early Americas was very important and had affected America in many ways. Photography impacted American society during the 1800’s - 1860’s by documenting historical events and allowed the Americans to see themselves from a whole new perspective. Photography captured significant events in American history such as the Gold Rush, the construction of the railroads and also daily lives of the American citizens. By capturing the way of life from different perspectives of American lives, this increased the sharing of ideas, different cultures, and ways of life that helped promote these ideas to other people. Photography also captured portraits of people and places which allowed people to see faces of people
Nearly every time our family eats in Cracker Barrel, we get a laugh about some of the old photographs hanging on the wall. It is hard to believe that those people had to be perfectly still for a very long time to just take one picture. In the time it has taken me to write this paragraph, my dad took a bunch of pictures of our cat. On just our phones alone, the picture quality, speed, and color were probably unimaginable 100 years ago.
(Forman, 1975). There is a sense of understanding amongst members of the journalism world, a sense of urgency to find the most thrilling story. Critics and professionals from that world recognize each other’s work. Forman even went on to win a Pulitzer Prize for one of the photographs taken on this tragic day, as well as two more prizes in his later career (Forman, 2010). In an article about photographers’ responsibility to help (or not) in the situation they’re photographing, Boston Globe columnist Joan Veonnochi stated in Forman’s defense, “Journalism requires detachment and photo journalism requires instant reflexes.
Truth about War Photography War Photography has been around for year and years and there 's always been questions about their representation of the truth. There has always been a partiality of representation but some wants to know does photography show the wars up close and personal or they might say what’s the purpose of war photography. Some people believe that the purpose of war photography is that it has shifted throughout the years. During the earlier years of war photography the photos were purely used to inform the public and for the public to see what happen during that particular war at that time.
For instance, she cites iconic dates, in which photographs drew public attention, such as incidents in “1840’s, “1871”, and “1930’s”. By choosing to include the dates of events and notable time periods, she exemplifies her knowledge of the history of photography and establishes how her claims are based on factual research and analysis of previous events. Rather than speaking abstractly about the social implications of photography, she references specific events, which strengthens her argument, since factual evidence is more difficult to refute due to its objective
As many as 13 photographers were commissioned by the FSA and produced well over 270,000 images (prints and negatives) during this time span. Not only did the FSA provide visual proof of the social and economic problems facing America, these photos are significant for they exposed the disparities of living in America and helped shape policy and social reform after the First World War. They set a precedent for a new genre of storytelling that combined visuals with words, and collectively remembered for documentation of strife and discontent in America. The FSA photos and documentaries are part of history and continue to be included in numerous photo books, magazines, newspapers, news services, museums, and exhibits as one of the most convincing examples of documentary photography. In retrospect, this form of visual advocacy served a higher purpose that elevated art as a form of social awareness and brought legitimacy to social reform and to the masses.
Women’s fashion in the 1020’s had to deal with many changes following the first world war, and the period referred as the “roaring 20’s”, the era of the “flapper. ”The 1920’s dresses were lighter since the dresses had less material and new synthetic fabrics and brighter and shorter than before. Fashion designers experimented with fabric colors, textures, and plenty of patterns to create variety of new styles of dresses. Coats and jackets were most often trimmed with fur in the 1020’s.
"The photographic image is the object itself, the object freed from the conditions of time and space that govern it. No matter how fuzzy, distorted, or discolored, no matter how lacking, in documentary value the image may be, it shares, by virtue of the very process of its be- coming, the being of the model of which it is the reproduction; it is the model." "Photography does not create eternity, as art does, it embalms time, rescuing it simply from its proper corruption. The aesthetic qualities of photography are to be sought in its power to lay bare the realities."
In the essay, “ Why We Take Pictures,” the author Susan Sontag states that photography is not only a simple tool for seeking pleasure but can also be used against anxiety and as tool of power. Sontag emphasises the importance of photography during traveling by stating the anxieties that people can face if they are not taking pictures. First, Sontag points out that people feel disorientation in a new place the uncertainty of what the new place will be like can cause people to panic. However, taking picture enables people to have certain control over the new environments the fact that one knows where he or she is at and where he or she has been, helps individuals cure their anxieties. Second, Sontag indicates that anxieties during traveling can also be caused by the guilt of not being at work.
