In chapter 5 of The Hobbit in the riddles in the dark chapter this is the major turning point in Bilbo’s career as a burglar, but Bilbo is almost caught by the the creature that lives in the darkness of the cave, Gollum. When Bilbo falls in the cave he tries to find out where he is, but it is completely dark and he can barely see anything as he stumbles in the dark. As Bilbo is stumbling he comes across a golden ring and picks it up without thought, but this was the turning point of his career and what he didn’t realize that this was a powerful ring that had the ability to turn him invisible. What he doesn’t know is that he is not alone, but there is a creature in an island in the middle of the lake called Gollum, (Gollum was on his boat looking for fish at that time). Gollum realizes that there is someone there and talks to himself since of course he is lonely. Bilbo and him talk and they agreed to a riddle contest in which if Bilbo wins Gollum will tell him the way out and if Gollum wins he gets to eat Bilbo. Bilbo and Gollum tell each other riddles and Gollum, because of life in the darkness he tells riddles about darkness and mostly dark things while Bilbo, talks about life above ground and the sun and most things good (mostly about food) they tell riddles for some while. Then Bilbo asks what’s in his pocket to himself and Gollum takes it as a riddle or question. Gollum gets three chances and loses, and since Gollum was supposed to get Bilbo out he tries to find his ring to kill Bilbo, but when he realizes it’s gone he gets mad and starts accusing Bilbo and then hunts for him, but Bilbo slips on his ring without realizes he is invisible and he goes and follows Gollum as Gollum doesn’t realize he is leading Bilbo to the exit. Then Bilbo realizes he is invisible when he crashes into Gollum and Gollum
