What is a Hobbit, was always the question on people's mind but now it is what is the story of The Hobbit and what made it a phenomenon? The story shows that no matter how small a person is they can make a huge impact on the world around them. The books main flaw was a lack of character development and emotion shown by the characters in middle earth and this and many other things were greatly changed in the films. The story of The Hobbit was a testament to time and every other fantasy draws inspiration from the world of Middle Earth. The Hobbit captures the pure essence of adventure as such a small creature is thrown head first into the larger world. The story displayed that even the smallest person can make a difference in the world. Bilbo Baggins, a simple creature living a quiet and simple life, of all people is chosen to help the rightful king of Erebor to reclaim his home and slay a dragon, just the very thought is unlikely yet he helps them succeed and changes the entire northeast region. If he had not retrieved the Arkenstone and brought it to Thranduil and gave the men and elves leverage over Thorin who would have known what would happen. Middle Earth was first shown in The Hobbit and the world mesmerized readers from the elaborateness of the creatures, languages, and cultures. There are games, movies, and other fantasy books that use the creatures from Middle Earth in their own works mainly incorporating the Elves, Dwarves, and Orcs. This world was like our own but at the same time very unique and different yet the problems and burdens faced in these tales were relatable and human. The first character I want to talk about is Mr. Bilbo Baggins because in my view he is the character that went thorough the most change in compare to any other character that we read about so far. Mr. Bilbo Baggins is the main character/hero in the book and we can analyze and critique his journey from “Joseph Campbell: Hero with a Thousand Faces, 1949.” In the beginning of the book, Mr. Bilbo Baggins is living in Bag End, a hobbit community, like every other hobbit he is comfortable and content. He loves his food, his pipe, and his snug little hole. This here, Bag End, is the ordinary world and this where Mr. Bilbo Baggins lives in, but there is more to Mr. Bilbo Baggins than what meets the eye.
The Hobbit, a marvelous tale by the accomplished novelist J.R.R. Tolkien, closely follows the outline of the hero’s journey. Hero’s journey is the process where a protagonist in a story often completes in order to complete this quest. This is shown through three separate phases or acts called the departure, initiation, and the return with each act containing different stages of the plot. Because of it’s beautiful understanding of this process, The Hobbit is agreed to be one of the best examples of the hero’s journey use in modern day literature. Each step had an equal role to providing the prodigious anecdote’s importance to people across the world.
Bilbo’s third trial is finding a way for the dwarves to escape the wood-elves palace. When the guard is drunk, Bilbo lets the dwarves out by stealing the keys and pushing the dwarves into barrels. After a hero’s many trials, they face their ultimate enemy, and for Bilbo that is Smaug, the dragon. Smaug shares qualities from the other does Bilbo faced, but with more powers and fearsomeness. Facing many new enemies in his trials, they all leave Bilbo something in return for defeating them such as the knowledge that no adventurer will be left behind, courage and respect from the dwarves as he helped set them free when all hope seemed to be lost, confidence and willingness to fight and lastly, the knowledge that while his friends can protect him, he can protect his friends.
Bilbo Baggins the Burglar Thesis: In the book The Hobbit, the character Bilbo Baggins is a middle class hobbit who must challenged his introverted nature to help the dwarves reclaim their land. Bilbo Baggins was living like that, until one day, thirteen dwarves and his old wizard friend(Gandalf) enter his house and start eating and talking like it was their house.
While grading the examination papers of a student, he noticed that they had left an answer page blank. For reasons unknown, Tolkien took his pen and wrote on the page, “In a hole in the ground, there lived a hobbit.” Afterwards, he felt a desire to research this further, to find out what exactly a hobbit was, and later arranged and published his writings as a novel. It was originally considered a children’s story, but today is read and enjoyed by all

The experiences Bilbo encounters throughout his journey define and shape him into the hero he becomes. The Hobbit follows the story of Bilbo by mirroring the heroic journey, showing Bilbo’s dramatic change from the Hobbit he once was.
