May 25, 1997, Sherrice Iverson, a 7-year-old girl lost the chance to grow up and live a full life. Jeremey Strohmeyer, a teenage boy walked into the women’s bathroom and intentionally molested and strangled the innocent child. David Cash was a key factor to whether that girl had a chance to a future or not. Choosing to ignore what he witnessed, he walked out of the bathroom leaving the teenage boy and 7 year old girl alone. Because of Cash’s decision, it created a controversial debate of whether he should continue to go to Berkeley.

On April 20, 1999, two disturbed teenage boys Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris began a killing rampage at Columbine High School in the suburban town of Littleton, Colorado. This was considered one of the worst school shootings to occur at that time. In the morning of April 20, before noon, the two juveniles had killed 13 people to include 12 students and 1 teacher; they also wounded another 23 people before turning the guns on themselves. In mid November, four teenagers’ bodies were found in the Connecticut River. The victims were all nineteen years old.  A car that was found with them had been flipped over in the river.Police had stated that the names of the victims were believed to have been Christy Stevens, Jill Sawyer, Laura Lagrotteria, and Michael Gallo. The teens had been seen drinking illegally before the tragic event. A school shooting, carried out by, then senior students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold took the entire community by storm. With 15 deaths, including the perpetrators, and 24 non-fatal injuries, the memories of this horrific massacre will forever resonate in the minds of all. With a meticulously thought out plan, the two shooters prepared guns and bombs in order to perform the sickening act. Families, the FBI, local officials, psychologists, and more spent a multitude of time trying to figure out the reasoning as to what motivated the two boys to kill and cause so much pain to others. Thus supporting his credibility and creating trust between the author and audience. Gladwell appears to have acquired the knowledge of such events therefore, exemplifying to the reader his credibility, adding onto and advancing his argument.

A teacher’s son, clad in black and carrying two 9mm pistols rampaged through a Connecticut elementary school, killing 20 small children and six adults, a tragedy President Obama said had “broken the hearts of America” (Williams).” Many people believe that the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre was planned because of the odd demeanor of the parents or victim, Emilie Parker, the medical personnel who were turned away from the scene, why care flight helicopters were never requested, and questions concerning the validity of the medical examiner. This tragic event was not at all planned because all of these questions can be reasonably answered.

Many young people have been diagnosed with depression; they show feelings of depression through acting out and bullying. The extreme example of this is hurting others through the use of weapons and force. These actions can also be taken out of depression from having diseases including autism and challenges with development. One twenty-year old, Adam Lanza, lived with autism and severe developmental issues. Adam murdered twenty-seven children and adults on December fourteenth, two-thousand twelve.

The Columbine High School Massacre took place on April 20, 1999. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold were behind the horrible act. While what they did was one of the worst shootings to ever take place in America, it was a well thought-out plan. The two had planted a small bomb about 3 miles from the school as a diversion so they could go through with their heinous crime a little smoother. The bomb went off at 11:14 AM and started a small fire which was quickly extinguished by the fire department. At 11:19 AM, Harris entered the school equipped with a 12-gauge Savage-Springfield 67H pump-action shotgun, which he fired 25 times, and a High-Point 995 Carbine 9mm carbine with 13 10-round magazines, which was fired a total of 96 times. The school shooting at Columbine high school was one of the bloodiest and atrocious school shootings in United States history. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris devised a plan to inflict as much terror as possible in their school as well as the rest of the world. Even though their original plan of detonating propane bombs in the school cafeteria failed, these two improvised and still proceeded with the massacre. Columbine was never about killing mankind; Columbine was a quest to ensure both killers would reach widespread notoriety.

School-related shootings, particularly those that are dramatic in nature, evoke strong public outcry, and justifiably so. Following an apparent spate of incidents occurring between 1997 and 2001, it seemed as if the USA was on the brink of a moral panic concerning delinquency to young youth. Since then, "Columbine has become a keyword for a complex set of emotions surrounding youth, risk, fear, and delinquency in 21st century America" (Muschert 2007). One alarmist (Stein 2000) went so far as to label Columbine as a metaphor for a contemporary crisis of youth culture.

When was it ever a smart idea to broadcast bad situations like it was entertainment? People see horrific situations and the media constantly replays it like it’s supposed to be praised. School shootings shouldn’t be heard of at all and it makes it hard to ignore bad situations when people are jumping to hear about the next bad event. Media coverage of school shootings should not be overly broadcasted because it can cause more problems in the end.

Through reading “Columbine: Whose Fault is It?” by Marilyn Manson we can identify that the media had a great influence in the aftermath of the shooting, and who was the scapegoat for it, in other words who is to blame for what happened to those poor 13 innocent teenage kids. The Columbine High School massacre was an infamous event that went down as one of the worst shootings to happen to a high school in America. The video that made me think the most, was Prison Kids: Juvenile Justice in America. They interviewed many kids, parents and the government officials who worked alongside these programs. This video was the most interesting to me because you do not hear much about kids being arrested.
