My favorite reading of the three experts was Thunder at Wembley by Virginia Woolf. One of the main reasons why this was my favorite was due to its mysterious content. The first clue of mystery is within the title itself. The word Thunder usually in literature stands for danger, and paints a picture of a dark, mysterious night. Virginia Woolf does an exceptional job of using the rhetorical appeal of Pathos through the except.
One example of this is when he wrote “He reached the house just as another flash of lightning changed the night to day for an instance, then returned the graffiti-scarred building to the grim shadows.” This sentence helps develop a sinister mood, and also reveals the condition of Greg’s town. Another instance of descriptive writing is “...Greg could see a squarish patch of light on the floor.” The singular patch of light in the otherwise dark structure builds up suspense. It sets the mood to be mysterious, and eerie. Another example of mood development is when the story said “Squinting, Greg could see an old table on its side against one wall, what looked like a pile of rags or a mattress in the corner, and a couch, with one side broken, in front of the window.” The old furniture clumped up together creates an eerie mood for the reader as they wonder why it sits there in one place leaving the rest of the room empty. Magical Realism is a literary or artistic genre in which realistic narrative and an acceptance of magic in the real world. Julio Cortazar’s “House Taken Over” is a good example of magical realism, because the house is taken over by something that is unusual and supernatural. “The first few days were painful, since we’d both left so many things in the part that had been taken over” (pg.40). I chose this sentence to show that the thing that took over was really powerful like magic but was being used as dark magic in this story. Therefore, “House Taken Over” is an example because the story used spirits that were powerful and was scaring the people that lived in the house.

Setting is the key element in Gothic Literature. It displays the different places and architectures that are essentials to visualize Gothic. The setting is highly significant in a Gothic novel because it helps to add horror and fear to its mood and dreadful weakness to its characters. As said by Snodgrass, the settings of Gothic literary works present an extensional symbolic psychological case to its human characters (158).Gothic fictions are usually set in isolated landscapes or highly secured prisons, secret passages or corridors, old castles or ghostly houses, and graveyards. According to Hogle, Gothic areas might be "a castle, a foreign place, an abbey, a vast prison, a subterranean crypt, a graveyard, a primeval frontier, or island, a large old house or theatre.
