The objective of the first year program of an Architecture school is to introduce the fresh minds to the design discourse of architecture. Students have a different perception of how architecture is produced before they enter into the the program. From the admission interviews it is perceived that their understanding of architecture revolves around compartmentalisation of spaces, rather the spatial experience of the said spaces. The first challenge is the make them associate architecture with innate human needs such as Light and Space.

The most important source of light for all man kind is the sun because it is the only natural source of light. Natural light has been the constant source of inspiration for Architects since the beginning to time. For the students to understand how the reception of light modifies architecture is highly consequential. Due to the changing light throughout the day, form and surface follow the course of the sun to create optimum spaces for human inhabitation. In the following weeks we can take them to a building which has a completely different form, being in Lahore gives us the opportunity visit pieces of architecture which belong to a significant period of history. At these spots/streets the students can sit and draw the same way, but the results can be predicted to be different from what they would have drawn at the their own university which is a modernist-looking building with straight cut lines.
Further down the project we can use the drawing that they have produced to create small objects which replicate the shadows that are formed in the drawing. Because these drawings were constrained in a particular size the sizes of the model would be the same, but as the choice of the area of the frame was up to the student, will be unique. so there would be some coherence between the entire studio.
This part of the project will be intended for them to understand the reactions of light on the inside spaces of architecture. Creating three dimensional objects that produce shadows on the outside, will also be letting light inside, thus informing the students of how space is created
For the next step which can be the upcoming session or the same, I showcase the pictures on the wall. The children observe each other’s’ motives, their personal feelings and pure concept of what they heard (it can be a basic form of their fabric design). They talk about what they observed and give their ideas about the illustrations (it builds their speech skills in front of the others, provides self-confidence and self-esteems).
We all continue to live in a world surrounded by varyng forms of art, music, painting, literature, and all these are results of creative human activity in which materials are formed to show an idea or a thought of communication. I believe arts are meant to aid in understanding our past, describe the present and predict the future. “The Weather Project” by Olafur Eliasson managed to create an interesting presentation of the weather. The exposition seems to initiate an impressive tension between the city and nature. The room is encircled in natural elements sun, mist, light and by introducing these natural elements Ellison seems to persuade viewers to entirely appear themselve in the space and the exhibition.
2015 Marilynne Robinson’s Housekeeping sets out to define home and the role of women in it through the practices of housekeeping. Through a series of polarizations (fixity – transience, society – nature, dividing – merging, outdoor – indoor, patriarchy – matriarchy) taken up by the characters Robinson manages to show how different notions of housekeeping correspond to different definitions of home and different female subjectivities. The lighting in Donnie Darko movie is a key component of composition which creates our sense of illuminating for people and things. This movie uses two sources of lighting; natural light, such as daylight, when the scene is in an outdoor area for example, walking from school, at home, waiting at bus stop, or playing outside of the school on sunny days. Another source of light is artificial spotlight which is used in the movie indoors to cut and shape the light at the dining table, in the classroom or in the psychotherapist's house. Also, distinct shadows are used as an essentially smooth surface that reflects hard light in the Halloween party to feature deep shadows and scary areas in function of the plot. Three-points of lighting create ominous shadows in the horror genre for all the actors at Donnie and Elizabeth's Halloween party with lighting from below the cast to create monstrous objects in real life.
Tim Burton contributes to the world of animation in the film industry and redefined stop motion . Lighting is an important cinematic technique directors can use to set the mood for a particular scene. For instance, high-key lighting is used to flood a scene with light, often making the set and characters appear happy and safe. In contrast, low-key lighting casts deep shadows across the set and characters creating a sense of danger. Burton makes good use of lighting techniques in many of his films.
“ The Fall of the House of Usher “ by Edgar Allan Poe is a short story about a man named Roderick Usher who initiates some events such as evoking his friend The Narrator as a protagonist to the dreadful mansion. The images such as the house and gothic ambience are used to reinforce the idea of giving the mystery to the reader. Edgar Allan Poe uses gothic elements to show how they affect the atmosphere and the characters. In the beginning , the gothic atmosphere of the house is indicated with terrifying images such as “ dull, dark and soundless ” that the feeling of horror vaccinated into reader by the thoughts of the narrator.

Mankind has always faced many natural obstacles, one of them being the harsh elements of the weather. In order to protect themselves, humans began to build shelters to keep warm and survive. This acted as the roots that gave rise to the industry of architecture. As time has passed and societies have come and gone, the advancements in architecture have continued to grow, but never again has there been a time more influential and lasting on architecture than the era of the Greeks and Romans. Their architectural achievements revolutionized modern architecture in a way that is still being used to this day.

Though this may seem as a simple objective, two main limitations stand in the way of achieving it. The first is the limited understanding of the human attachment/inclination towards nature. The first step in the design is to organize these sources into their own clues. The design style of Frank Lloyd Wright, which we discussed before, has changed greatly, and these changes came from his contact with Japanese culture. The early works of Frank Wright Lloyd were not apart from the mainstream, is a typical American colonial style. Continuity of space has not been understood, at least not reflected in his early works. After 1890, he was exposed to the Japanese woodblock print for the first time, he understood the consciousness for spatial depth and the spatial continuity.
By this he was able to reduce elements into simple shapes, for example he would reduce a leaf or flower to merely a minimal geometric shape. He would then use this original pattern to create new compositions to complete a space. This type of simple yet creative thinking became the guide and source to all his architecture. He would have different elements such as floor plans, decorative arts and elevations that make up an architecture derived and generated from one design concept or theme. When put in a three dimensional perspective all these elements would blend together harmoniously
Walking up to the magnificent La Pedrera building the first thing I had to see was the pillar known as the elephant's foot. This pillar is notorious and was mentioned in the reading due it occupying too much space on the sidewalk of Passeig de Gracia. During construction Gaudi was informed of this by the government and told to make modifications, but Gaudi wouldn't budge. He wrote a letter back to the government and stated that if he were to modify the pillar, he would include a mocking inscription that would be-little the government. Fortunately the government rethought their demands and the pillar wasn't changed but this small aspect of the construction process I find awesome.
Tectonics is defined as the science or art of construction, both in relation to use and artistic design. It refers not just to the activity of making the materially requisite construction that answers certain needs but rather to the activity that raises this construction as an art form. It is concerned with the modeling of material to bring the material into presence - from the physical into the meta-physical world (Maulden, 1986). Since tectonics is primarily concerned with the making of architecture in a modern world, its value is seen as being a partial strategy for an architecture rooted in time and place therefore beginning to bring poetry in construction. Tectonics, however, has the capacity to create depth-ness of context resulting in the implicit story being told by the tectonic expression.
These sensory signals have a large impact on our relationship and experience of an environment because they are able to physically and emotionally engage and connect us to the architecture. Although these types of sensorial qualities may not make or break the successfulness of architecture, they must remain of high importance because of their ability to reinforce an individual’s personal connection to a place. Juhani Pallasmaa, claims that our design culture has forgotten the importance of the senses in engaging our whole being- physical and emotional- in an architectural experience. This theory speaks to an experience that goes beyond a visual relationship between a person and architecture.
