I believe Baroque period was significantly important in Bohemia and it left behind major legacy. Baroque is very different from previous styles. For example, Gothic period is all about pointed arches, flying buttresses, cross ribbed vaults and rose windows. Moreover, Renaissance period is about invention of perspective, symmetry and proportions. Finally, Baroque period is about drama, light, gold decorations, dynamic lines and orientation to senses, not reason. There are many monuments in Prague connected with this period that will be presented in this paper.
Firstly, I would like to point out that I was a kind of “architecture ignorant” before taking Art and Architecture course this summer. I thought I know Prague well, I believed I know the most important monuments, that I am more or less able to recognize in what styles and periods are these monuments build. Well, I have to admit I was wrong, maybe I can even say terribly wrong. It included the largest Jesuit college in Bohemia, two churches and three chapels (Kotalík, 2001). I would like to speak about Clementinum as it is today rather than about the historical part. As a tourist you can see four main things: Mirror Chapel, Meridian Hall, Astronomical Tower and Baroque Library Hall that serves also as a Czech National Library. Meridian Hall is on the second floor of the tower and was used for determining noon. However, the most precious place is the Baroque Library. When I saw this place for the first time, it really took my breath away. It is magnificent place, decorated with ceiling fresco, and unique atmosphere.
