The goal of this interview was to learn more about the day-to-day experience of being a professor. In order to achieve this goal, we asked professor Helwig about the responsibilities that he has, what a day in his life looks like, and the advice he would give to prospective students.
Firstly, professor Helwig pointed out that he has three main responsibilities as a professor: teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities. He pointed out that a big misconception about teaching is that not much time goes into its preparation, and he was happy to let us know that contrary to what students think, this is not the case. He stressed that being interested in research and teaching does not mean that you do not find challenges, but that you have the passion to work through them. For instance, he said that some students enjoy the idea of research but not the process, but that being a good researcher requires a patient personality. He explained how research is a slow process and the results are seen much later; therefore, it is important to be motivated, and explained that what motivates him is “the passion to find out new things…and the thrill of discovery”. Build positive relationships with students will help establish a more comfortable classroom environment. Michie have put a great amount of effort at trying to get to know his students on a more personal level, such as through individual home visiting and personal questionnaires about each student’s likes and dislikes about school. In order for students to feel that the information is relevant to them, teachers should make connections and relate to real life examples. Michie uses his past classroom experiences to connect to his students and further sparks class discussion. Michie would try to relate to what the students were going through in their lives to get to know them better.

He discusses two points while discussing hierarchy that convince the audience to believe that what he speaks about is the truth. He does tell “The most useful subjects for work are at the top within this hierarchy.” He mentions how children were conditioned to believe that those activities will not get them a job in the future and turned away from activities they enjoy. He specifies this when he says, “If you think of it, the whole system of public education around the world is a protracted process of university entrance.” Many students with different talents get rejected by the university because the talent they had was ignored in the school.
On the other hand, when one describes the professor’s teaching style, it is one of the opportunities to deliver the message to the public. It can also be effective and informative for others when students attempt to pick the right teacher who fits their needs and professional goals. I would agree with Aimee’s Morrison statements that some of the ratings on Rate My Professor are emotional, unprofessional, and at the same time this information can be handy for those who use this website wisely. First, author wrights that rating comments could influence the emotions of professors who are being rated.
“In a study done by Sagness and Salzman, the majority of the teachers reported they used a greater variety of learning activities and students participating more actively in learning when class time was extended”.(Johnson ) The increase in different learning activities help break up the longer class times; thus keeping the student's attention. Lessons in class are rushed and left unfinished due to the tight time restraints placed upon teachers. They are given an inadequate amount of time to teach the excessive amount of material given to them to cover and, more often than not, they fall behind in their lesson plan, leaving them unable to teach all of the topics in each of their classes. She made relearning the topic very fun and pleasurable. My least favorite was when she called on me to answer questions pertaining to the lecture. I really did not like that at all. In short, I am still very interested in becoming a nurse professor, maybe in near future.
As a university professor, John should have an obligation to supply education to his students in the best way possible, while keeping the student-teacher boundary that exists. Carol tells John that she has trouble understanding his book in which he questions the purpose of education. In an attempt to help Carol, he tells her that people thought that he was stupid as a child. John believes that he can reach Carol on a more personal level by sharing his views and experiences. He hopes that he can create a better relationship with her; in turn, he believes this will further her education.
However, I now have a new perception and appreciation for professors and teaching assistants. It takes a great extent of work and time to put together a large lecture style course. Some of my teaching assistant duties included taking attendances and grading quizzes, test, or papers. I did not realize how much time it went into grading quizzes, test, and papers. Since the tests were composed of a multiple-choice question component in addition to a short essay, I was able to reinforce my past knowledge of concepts and course material when deciding if the essay answers were accurate.

Being a teacher is a journey that has much to do with learning about yourself and being aware that what happens in your classroom reflects only on how are you with yourself. Teachers are not conscious that they project into students, and that affects how things go in the classroom. I believe the first characteristic of a good teacher is that he/ she is always willing to analyze his/her teaching performance. Second the teacher is humble enough to receive input about the development and application of techniques, learning from it and improving.
The importance of good lesson planning and the benefits they have for the teacher. When considering the importance and even the significant of effective lesson planning, quite often we immediately considering the benefits that this can have on the student. Effective lesson planning certainly does benefit the student, discussed later in this essay.
