CASA works closely with Henrico County juvenile judges who refer cases, clerks of the court who assist with files and guardians ad litem representing the legal interests of children. Judges support the best interests of the child by assisting with training new advocates, assigning CASAs, and using the investigative reports to make more knowledgeable decisions for the child and family. Henrico CASA has received many accolades from the judges, including current chief judge, the Honorable Rondelle Herman, who says "CASA fills in a lot of blanks so the judges can see things more clearly."
CASAs work with Social Services (DSS) caseworkers to ensure information is exchanged to create the best safety plan and service provision for child victims.
I, today will be the judge in the Ponyboy Curtis against the local foster care case. Our jury will be one half foster care and one half greasers Here in honorable federal court. Ponyboy, I call you up to stand. I thought that it would go like this. That he shouldn 't be taken away because his brothers are a good family, and stable.
The service user I chose to assess is a 17-year-old Hispanic female whose modified name is Tiana Santos. I provided therapeutic casework services to Tiana for a year in my previous role as a Therapeutic Caseworker at the Children’s Village, a foster care agency. Tiana was placed in foster care after been removed from her mother’s care due to emotional and physical abuse. Tiana’s father abandoned her mother and her youngest sibling when she was 5 years old. Tiana’s memories about her father were very limited due to her young age.
Shirley Cole (Family Court Counselor) prepared a report to the court tin May 2007 which included referring Rebecca for an addiction assessment. Rebecca provided me with a copy of a letter dated May 2007 to Shirley Cole from Addiction Services stating Rebecca completed an addiction assessment and was low Probability of a Substance Abuse Disorder. Shirley Cole stated in the conclusion of this report that her “clinical assessment is that Rebecca is a very capable, responsible, and mature young woman.” She states “Rebecca has demonstrated tremendous resiliency in spite of numerous personal and practical obstacles.” Shirley Cole continues to state that there was “no indication from collateral contacts with Child Protection, Police Services, the children’s Guidance Counselor or other professionals in Health Services, nor from Rebecca presentation across several contacts that there was any substance to the numerous allegations, John, her former partner, has made against her as a person or a parent.”
I was not sure about what to write for my journals, I did not want to write more than just my daily duties. I ended up thinking that writing about my perspectives, goals, objectives about my duties at work and the homeless shelter system. I started working at the Aguila INC Shelter, which is my place of work and internship. I started in November 10, 2015 as a Case Manager and it has been a challenging place for me. I did not have the experience, knowledge and I dare to say the educational background that may make me feel more comfortable to work with Homeless Families.
Natalie Opoka Kruse HWLC February 9, 2015 Las Casas Paper Imagine a world where everything you read is written in the same manner; same purpose, same sentence structure, same language etc. Readers would become bored because writing would be predictable. This is why writing is unique. All writing has a purpose whether that be to entertain, inform or persuade. Writers use different forms of artistry to convey their message to audiences.
I agree with what you say about de las Casas "narratives were only effective to an extent. " I think it was admirable what he did do because the atrocities may have continued for much longer had he not spoke up. In speaking up, Casa was "accused of treason and even endured charges of heresy" (Bartolome De Las Casas 39). Casas went into seclusion for 7 years and then returned to political activity after which time, laws began to take effect to protect the Indians (39). I see de las Casas as an early activist and social reformer.
I am all so concern regarding Judge Jessica Colon-Sayre bias regarding the case base on a statement she allegedly made. Apparently in her chastising of my daughter (Jaclyn), Judge Jessica Colon-Sayre supposedly made a statement regarding her personal experience and used it as a point of references in the case, (“She
Tina Alvarado SPA 222-A5 3/13/17 WAC 3: Bartolome de las Casas Bartolome de las Casas was a well-known missionary, theologian, historian, and bishop of Chiapas in Guatemala. In the year 1502, he set out on a voyage towards the Western Hemisphere to help manage Columbus father’s land. During the domination of Cuba, he worked as a chaplain to the invaders that were taken. Las Casas fought against slavery under the food-for-work economic system. Around 1552 he published a book, Brief Relation of the Destruction of the Indies in Seville.
After years of little progress, in 1520 Charles V granted a hearing for Las Casas’s crusade. During this hearing, Las Casas argued that the time for military conquest had passed and now was the time for peace. Despite Charles V ruling in favor of Las Casas, very little could be done for the natives due to distance. Although, Bartolome de Las Casas did not set out to become an activist, intending only to settle land and preach the gospel, his faith lead him to see that true Christians did not act the way the Spanish Conquistadors did and that something must be done to right the wronged.
Working at the Guardian ad Litem’s office has been a difficult, but rewarding experience. One case that specifically stood out to me involved a mother and her newborn child. The woman had been addicted to drugs for years. After the baby was born, the child was directly put into the foster care system. The mother had not spent a single day with her child since the day it was born.
The reporting party (RP) stated the foster mother Candace Coleman gave a seven day notice on foster child Joshua Laney DOB: 3/22/07, DOP: 5/12/16 after meeting with the child 's biological father on 6/17/16 (name of father not provided). The RP stated on 6/22/16 the foster mother brought the child to the DCFS office alone with all his belonging and informed the RP that she was going out of town. The foster mother informed the RP the child could return to the home if other placement was unavailable. The child was placed in at Leroy Hines 233 Baseline Rd, Lavern 91750 which is a 30 day temporary
This can be seen in the growing number of court-involved status offenders who were being detained and placed outside of their homes for noncriminal behavior (Shubik & Kendall, 2007). Following multiple studies and research, the President’s Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice recommended that the juvenile court be the agency of last resort and that community-based organizations, not penal institutions, should be responsible for these youths (Shubik & Kendall, 2007; Farrington,
“They are likely to face all sorts of dangers such as: aggressive pets, confrontational family members, observation of weapon and drugs, neglected children, disgusting homes, etc.” When going to a child/teenagers home, supervisors and receptionists should know where you are going and what you are doing. Having someone go with you to the person’s home, called a “buddy system” is the preferred method. Reviewing files and looking at the parents and family member’s records isn’t a bad idea either. The caseload assignment guidelines states that “a JPO be assigned no more than 20 active cases total across all legal status types: intake, probation, commitment, post commitment probation, and/or conditional release for the first six weeks.
As a CASA volunteer, my mom works with neglected, abused, or foster care children alongside their legal aid and the court system. CASA volunteers make sure children do not get lost in the foster care or court system and advocates what is best for the child after spending a lot of time with the child and the other adults present in their life. CASA volunteers are often the one stable adult a child can have in their life. My mom would spend hours a week working to help each kid, whether it just be as simple as taking them to lunch or going to court to speak on the child’s behalf. All of the children were in foster or group homes looking for a stable home.
7/7/17 shelter care hearing held with Judge Callaway. Mr. Casteel (release from Jail) and Ms. Thomas (incarcerated) were not present for the hearing. Judge Callaway adjudicated Axel, who is currently in foster care. On 7/7/17 the worker completed transfer ISP meeting with the CAN worker, on-going worker, and Ms. Thomas in jail.
