A career in marketing has significantly changed with the growth of technology, therefore working on career development can improve a person’s skill set and help to market themselves to future employers. Two articles that are discussed and compared in this paper both focus on career development in regards to marketing and then analyzed to determine which skills prove essential for my own personal development in the career of my choice. Using Monster.com a few dream marketing positions were found to determine skills asked for in the job description and then compared to the articles to see if they were in fact any way similar. The first article, “Introducing Professional and Career Development Skills”, it discusses recent studies that show that business practitioners have stated that marketing graduates lack certain skills necessary to have a successful career in marketing (Kelley, Craig, Bridges, and Claudia, 2005). Those looking for new employees in marketing are looking for candidates who have oral, written, interpersonal and leadership skills and without these skills it can hinder someone from getting an entry level marketing position. These types of skills are valued among employers across all types of positions because they are key to being able to present a professional image as well as engage in positive teamwork and working with diverse groups. The main point of the second article, “Navigating a Marketing Career”, shares how the marketing landscape has significantly changed over time but there are developments for marketers of all levels to acquire certain skills and capabilities that they can apply to be successful (Wyner, 2017). An understanding of internet as a communication medium now plays a crucial role in marketing unlike before. Future employers are looking for those with strong communication and interpersonal skills that will aid them in team work, leadership, and customer service. Both the articles discussed in this paper we well as the job descriptions listed in various dream job positions show how many companies are looking for people with a similar skill set. It is up to the interviewee to set themselves apart by strategically planning how they will approach a job hunt and through authentic communication show off the skills that an employer is looking
