Make a Choice I strongly agree that the choices we make have the power to change our lives. This is backed up by the characters we explored in the books such as, Nya and Salva from A Long Walk to Water, Anne Frank from the Diary of Anne Frank, and Maya from My Favorite Chaperone. Furthermore, my personal experiences have also demonstrated the impact of choices on lives. In My Favorite Chaperone, Maya makes the significant choice to go to the dance and ultimately her parents support her with her choice. Even though convincing her parents was difficult her mother ultimately gave her a bracelet to wear to the dance with the statement that people date in America much younger. Maya states, “I was afraid of what people might think of me, but when …show more content…
This choice allowed complete strangers reading her story to see what a difficult life refugees might have it when moving to a completely different place. Kao Kalia Yang states, “ I want the world to see my family as more than refugees” (Yang 55). Her choice to share shows the testament to her pain as well as her choices along her …show more content…
Even while Salva “fights his demons” he decides to keep walking instead of giving up. Themes from the book such as persistence and perseverance save his life and thus influence his choices as the book progresses. Additionally, Nya chose to keep fetching water for her family, despite the long dangerous path that she had to make every day while barefoot. Her perseverance as well as her determination for her family led to people such as her dad drilling a well in their village, not only helping their family, but also the lives of others. Salva on the other hand embarked on a journey with his uncle and complete strangers. He walked for months in the desert, facing hunger, thirst, pain, and danger. However after he was able to make it to the refugee camp he was able to start a new life for himself as well as
Linda Sue Park guides us through the book A Long Walk to Water about a Sudanese refugee named Salva one of the only Lost Boys of Sudan that survived. Salva fled from his school when the war came to his part of the country. In A Long Walk to Water there were a few factors that made survival possible for Salva, support from loved ones, hope and perseverance, and opportunity. One factor that Salva survive was help and support from loved ones. In the novel Salva was scared and alone without his family after fleeing from school and into the bush.
Salva lived under the image of his whole family being killed, until he found his father many years later. Salva, the main character in Linda Sue Park’s A Long Walk to Water is able to survive and overcome a variety of challenges through being efficient, intelligent , and by listening to the group's leaders. Salva survives the first few challenges because, he was extremely Intelligent. For example he ran into the bush to escape the gunfire.
This shows that because Salva was a child and “too” small to do any real work his fellow Dinka village people left him alone but Salva perseveres and finds a women to help him. Lastly, Salva did what his Uncle Jewiir did and said to himself I only have to get through this day. On page 73 the book states “I need only to get through the rest of this day he told himself. This day and no other.” This also shows Salva likes to persevere in hard times and tell himself just to get through that one day and no other.
There are so many countries in the world that face many hardships. In the book “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park, a character faces many obstacles while living in Southern Sudan. These hardships include family loss, water issues, and ongoing war. Salva faced a lot of hardships, but family loss sticks out because he is only eleven and he has never been without them for a period of time like this. For example, A Long Walk to Water states, “As Salva walked, the same thoughts kept going through his head in rhythm with his steps.
A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park is a biography about Salva, a Dinka boy, who loses his family in the war. Salva goes on a long journey and travels to New York and finds his father. A theme present in the story is family will protect you, which will prove to be important to Salva’s story. A piece of evidence that proves the theme is "If it hadn't been for Uncle, Salva may have gone crazy with fear."
He was starving, and did not know how to hunt for food. He decided that he would travel through the thick forest to the nearest city, Athens. Athens was a very wealthy city and filled with people that he hoped could help him with his problem. It took him multiple days to travel there, but he finally made it to Athens. He was almost dead from starvation and exhaustion until he found hope.
This was only possible because the group’s perseverance and they worked through their troubles. In conclusion, we should all persevere like Salva and Nya and we will be rewarded. In the end, Salva makes his dream a reality and Nya gets clean water and can go to school, but only because they worked hard to do whatever they needed to
Perseverance is an important theme in A Long Walk To Water. The first example of Perseverance is when Salva listens to what his uncle says. His uncle uses his full name, and Salva thinks of his family. Uncle tells him to only walk as far as that bush, or clump of rocks. Salva perseveres by thinking of his family.
Another character in this book is Nya, an eleven year old Sudanese girl, who has to walk eight hours every day to get water for her family. She always keeps going, even though the way is hard because it is hot and the ground hurts to walk on. One example of hope and perseverance in A Long Walk to Water is how Salva never gives up. He is forced to leave his home and family in southern Sudan when his school is attacked, and goes on a long,
Throughout the novel Salva demonstrates determination by pushing himself to do his best and not give up on anything no mater what is going on. One instance where Salva showed determination is on page 65, paragraph 4. “Marial was gone. Uncle was gone, too, murdered by those Nuer men right before salva’s eyes. Marial and uncle were no longer by his side, and they never would be again, but salva knew that both of them would have wanted him to survive,to finish the trip and reach the itang refugee camp safely.

The book was very clearly explained and contained astonishing emotions, chapter by chapter.

Salva gets water and does housework for the old woman he considers family. In the text it states “He worked hard so she would not send him away.” (18) Salva worked hard, to have a place to stay during the fighting. Salva helped with the boats so he could get over the river faster. The text explains “It was hard work running back and forth between those cutting and those weaving.”
In the end, his suffering paid off as his hope and dream of finding his family alive finally came true. Through the story of a young boy who treasured all his blessings in a harsh environment, I learned to value the things I have and to not waste these special
