Background of the study According to Brown (2012), the word cinematography is derived from Greek roots, and is roughly translated as “writing with motion.” It is photography in motion, which accounts for why film is called motion picture in the first place, and is characterized by the transmission of message — whether in the form of actions, words, emotional subtext, etc. — through a series of visuals. The very essence of cinematography is to communicate to its audiences the core of the film itself. To fail to excel cinematically means to fail to communicate the film’s process message to the viewer. Compared to the production design, which involves colors and textures, cinematography involves movement, angles, and positions to be able to properly build a scene. But the method in which the scene is developed through the camera depends entirely on the filmmaker, and especially on how he will orchestrate the movement of the camera. Whether the viewers notice the camera work or not, the camera is always doing something and there are always reasons why (Lewis, 2014). Every camera angle, movement and composition must not be gratuitous regardless of whether the camera works should be conspicuous to the viewer or not. According to Brown (2012), to manipulate the camera movement requires standardized knowledge and experience by the cinematographer or DOP (Director of Photography). Although cinematography tends to be mistaken as nothing more than a train of images creating an action, etc., there is still the need to establish a visual world by using the language of cinema.
