As of January 1st, 2016, there are over 18.3 billion short tons of coal left in the United States. Coal is found in fifty-three of fifty-five counties in the state of West Virginia, and it leads the country in coal production. It does have a negative effect on the environment, it is a major source of air pollution, but overall coal is important to the country. As an energy source we depend on, without the mining of coal the country would have an energy problem. We use coal for heat, transportation, and electricity. Coal mining is also a major part of West Virginia's history and heritage.

It is used for transportation such as steam ships, but more popular steam locomotives. Steam locomotives were an important part in the building of this country. They linked the west to the east coast, and north to south. So if you think about it, coal helped build this country. Not only was it useful to America but coal was also very important in England. Railroads run all over, and is one of their main modes of transportation to this day. Many people relied on trains to get them where they were going, and without the power created by steam, there would be no train. Besides locomotives, steam also powered ships. For instance the Titanic was powered by coal which was burned to create steam to run the ships propellers. Steam also powered many other large and small ships throughout the years. Because of steam ships people were able to …show more content…
West Virginia leads the nation in coal production, coal can be found in 53 of 55 counties. There are many different types of methods that are used in the process of mining for coal in the state, and all over the country. These are surface mining, which is also known as strip mining. This is when there is coal just below the surface of the ground and the easiest way to access it is to wipe, or cut off the surface. This almost always has a negative affect on the environment. For example in the southern part of the state there are almost no mountains left because most of them have been destroyed for the small amount of coal that they can collect beneath the surface. Because of how this destroys the land many people are against it. The other type of mining is underground mining. This has less of an impact on the land but is more dangerous. Underground mining is when a tunnel is dug into the side of a mountain and people go inside to mine for the coal. It can be more dangerous because such things can happen as a cave in, or the mine could collapse and miners could be trapped inside. From going into the mine everyday miners can get diseases such as black lung, which can cause death. But the west Virginian mining industry is important to the economy and the well-being the mountain
The rail road and fossil fuels are the keys to Palmer’s vision for an industrialized Colorado. The increasing demand for energy from the populous tinkled up to business like Colorado Fuel and Iron Company to minimized cost. However, the side effects of bring the rail road and coal mining to the beautiful Colorado included destroying the landscape and polluting the living condition to citizens of Colorado. The growing cost of labor paved away to immigrant labor to enter into the coal mining industry instead of the experienced and more expensive colliers.
People used the railroad to get around and go from place to place and to travel. Companies used the railroad to get their products
It touched the lives of thousands of Americans and helped bring homesteaders out West and to the Plains to settle. It made moving from rural areas to cities much easier. The railroads were used for shipping and commerce. They helped bring large
“A painting showing an early factory plant shows that the smoke rising from the factory was black and full of coal ashes, affecting the air. Also, because the factory is next to water, it can be assumed that the factory has dumped into this water, causing it also to become polluted”(Document 3). Yes, wonderful products came from these factories; things like clothing and cars, but coal was being used to power these machines that produced. Black coal ash rose up into the sky and was being breathed in by the people and animals. Coal is not the best thing for people’s lungs.
In Cape Breton, the Sydney coalfield is one of the richest coal resources in the world. Before becoming miners, many poor European Immigrants came to Canada for hopes of earning more money than they did before, many Scottish immigrants settled in Cape Breton but remained poor and jobless. Business men in the late 1800s saw better use for the failing mining companies in Cape Breton if there was a railway built going from Sydney to Louisberg, the provincial government agreed to this which meant coal was not only worth more but the mines would not close during the winter months as they usually did. The dominion coal company took over many unprofitable coal mines in the Sydney Coal Field, many mining sites were built in Glace Bay when the coal industry really took, men were coming to get jobs daily in large numbers and The Dominion Coal Company hurriedly built boarding houses for the men to live in. After these boarding houses were built, they built school houses for the married miners children, hospitals, police stations and fire stations.
Coal engines crated power to for motors instead of man power or wind. Coal engines were the predecessors of the internal combustion engine. Coal became highly valuable but
The railroad allowed the shipment of fresh goods as well as heavy goods. It made inland trade possible, as well as travel time less. The news and mail traveled faster.
The steam engine operated numerous different sorts of machinery, which then sparked the urge to make structures, machines, better developments and better items. A great example are the streets that we drive on today. They are the product of high energy machines and street rollers, which were altogether based on the steam engine. The steam engine likewise led the development of various strategies for transportation. Steam engines brought upon the production of steam trains, which brought about better methods for transportation, for example, planes, automobiles and buses.
In 1694, Thomas Savery invented what would revolutionize the united states indefinitely, he called it the steam engine. This invention lead to the first steam engine locomotive which many would say was a beneficial turning point in the industrialization of america’s economy, allowing the steam engine to be used on the railways. Although the railroads did impact the United States and certain groups in positive ways, there were also negative effects that occurred. During this time period, there were many chinese immigrants that entered the United States who made up most of the workers that built the tracks.
The building of roads, canals and railroads played a large role in the United States during the 1800s. They served the purpose of connecting towns and settlements so that goods could be transported quickly and more efficiently. These goods could be transported fast, cheap and in safe way through the Erie Canal that was built to connect the Great Lakes to New York. Railroads were important during Civil War as well, because it helped in the transportation of goods, supplies and weapons when necessary. These new forms of transportation shaped the United States into the place that it is today.
The industry of burning these fuels as energy are very popular because of the easy access of these materials. Coal is located mainly in the province of Albany in Canada and the eastern states in the United States. Petroleum is located in the south east states of the united States and mainly the western side of Canada. Burning fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum have become very popular in the United States and Canada because these resources are located inside the country.

The biggest reserves in the world include the: USA, China, Russia, India, Europe, Australia, and parts of South Africa. It is important that one keeps in mind, that around the world there are many unrecoverable and undiscovered coal reserves. As of data from 2015 these are the amounts in tons of discovered, recoverable coal reserves. In the USA there is about 237 billion tons, Russia about 191 billion tons, China has 115 billion tons, Europe includes 89 billion
Will coal seam gas (CSG) damage our environment and plague our economy? Over the last few decades, several countries have started producing more CSG to satisfy their energy demand. However, the society have many concerns related to CSG, which is a type of unconventional oil and gas. These concerns arise because of hydraulic fracking that petrol companies use to extract CSG. The concerns include the effect of CSG on the environment and the economy, which that I will mention in depth.
