1. Commitment from top management: Code of conduct specifies the organization’s stance towards corporate social responsibility and has an impact on the overall reputation of the organization. Since, the Code of Conduct defines the core values of the organization the involvement of top management is a must. The top management provides direction, funding and other resources required to prepare and implement the code of conduct.

2. Preparation of policy documents: Once the top management commits to the development of the formal code of conduct, the main policy document is to be prepared. It contains the values of the organization, details of the ethics program, lines of reporting, monitoring process, and the management commitment to the same. Apart from the primary policy document various supporting policies are also to be formulated. These additional policies ensure proper implementation of main policy. Monitoring and evaluation: Having a Code of Conduct does not necessarily ensure that it will be followed; hence regular monitoring is required to assess the effectiveness and adherence. The monitoring of the existing code of conduct is essential. The analysis of number of complaints received, resolved, corrective action taken etc. helps in evaluating the effectiveness of code of conduct. Further, depending on the requirements, periodic audits and surveys could also be conducted to evaluate the adherence to the policies and the overall attitude of the organization towards ethics.

9. Review: Based on the overall assessment of code of conduct, policies shall be revisited and updated regularly to address the gaps and loopholes. Further, policies may be subject to revision on the basis of changing economic and legal requirements as well.
