BusinessDictionary.com (n.d.) defines community as a “self-organized network of people with common agenda, cause, or interest, who collaborate by sharing ideas, information, and other resources.” It’s a great definition, but it lacks the element of culture. Communities are groups of people who develop and perpetuate culture from traditions, holidays, local proverbs or idioms, to daily mannerisms and interaction protocols. All these things combine to influence the combined identity of a place and its people. When looking at a school community, it would be easy to look at community on a micro-level. I found the Media Center Assistant, Ms. MCA, to be perfectly lovely and accommodating to me and the students who walked through her doors. She explained that they handle a lot of the technology inside of the school, taking charge of the class lap-top sets, handing lab signups, running open computer stations for students, and procuring Kindles for student use. Recently, the head librarian had undertaken a huge project to organize books based on genre rather than alphabetical order to make the library feel more like an open, bookstore. Ms. MCA told me that they can have anywhere from 200 to 300 learners in the Media Center before class, trying to find the latest book. When asked about her favorite part of the job, Ms. MCA told me that she loves working with students and suggesting great reads. She asserted, “I keep a rack up front with all of my favorite books in every genre. That way, I always have something on hand for students who need a little help selecting a book to read.” Not only do students request books, but teachers check them out as well. Mrs. MCA has a book club for teachers after school to help teachers connect and communicate outside of the classroom as a community. After my visit to the Media Center, I can see why so many students and teachers flock to this part
