High school athletes need someone who is concerned about them, not the number of wins and losses throughout the season. Many sports coaches start the season with having the best intentions for the athletes, however, as the season progresses on the goals and motivation can begin to change due to the competitive nature. I gave them direction, provided instruction and only used discipline when only necessary plus I allowed the athletes to make decisions and assume responsibility (page 31). I accepted guidance from my staff and parents, too. The team’s culture changed for the better and became our social architecture that fueled the team psyche.
Throughout this portfolio, I examine issues for multiple athletic programs from an operational position. As a head softball coach, I was ultimately in charge of all logistics on and off the field. This includes the founding beliefs for the programs. While this chapter is written in regards to a softball programs, I believe that the mission, vision and my style are all adaptable to other sports. The philosophy must be embodied not just by a head coach, but the staff, players and extended community surrounding the athletic program.
High school coaches should not be required to give equal playing time to all players who make the team. Kids in society have been handed things their entire life. There has been little to no sense of accomplishment after earning a spot or position on a team. Spots should be earned by being the best at what someone does, not for pitty and for moral victories to make them feel good. “In high school, kids should understand playing time is earned.

As Robert Frost once said, “Two Roads Diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference. Similar to Frost, the men’s basketball coach at St. Anthony’s High School, Robert Hurley, has taken the road less traveled by declining many professional coaching opportunities in order to remain a leader in his Jersey City Community. Hurley’s love for basketball and coaching began at the age thirteen years old when he was recruited to join a youth basketball league in his hometown, Jersey City.
