The arts have been unfairly underestimated for quite some time through recent history. Many would argue that children don 't need it and that it 's a waste of time for adults. Few have a gift of talent in this area, with its rarity the decision to make art no longer a career pathway in school systems seemed to be not so hard to make for the officials of the school systems. However by taking away the arts as a career pathway it creates more problems than it solves. Three major problems taking away the arts creates is: lowered test scores, keeps students from pursuing careers they were made for, and can lead to a very bleak culture for our society.
In fact, many studies have proven that abolishing homework has a positive outcome. Schools should decrease the homework load because it has created social issues, it has little beneficial effect on academics, and it has negative impact on students’ mental health. It is important for children to be involved in social interactions such as: spending time with family, going to sporting events, and hanging out with friends. These are all activities that are crucial to the development of social skills.
Over recent years, the debate has gotten more attention as to whether students should have homework as homework has seemed to increase. Students having homework does not benefit them in their academic skills and should be abolished. In countries like Japan and Denmark, the students don’t have much homework, but exceed the United States on international tests. A lot of tests have proven that homework does not help improve a student’s performance of skills.
They even will take out daily announcements and pep-rallies to “prepare” the students for the tests they have that day (Ramey). With everything comes a Pro and Con side, but it is to find middle ground which is important. This argument of standardized testing, has the side of the nation trying to keep up with the standards of other country, because we are falling a bit behind in academics, compared to other countries. There is where a line where students aren’t getting the all-round experience and knowledge that they need to succeed.
The time that students spend outside of class studying for standardized tests could be used for something more productive. The school also has to create a modified schedule so students can take the standardized test- it will most likely result in shorter class periods, cutting away from valuable learning time. Getting good grades is already hard enough, and the pressure will not help their cause. According to the National Education Association, (NEA) “Many teachers also say paying students for grades leads to practical problem in their classroom, including pressure to inflate grades.” This could help your child double check his/her answers. However, you are also giving your child anxiety. Anxiety could lead to your child getting depressed and later killing him/herself.
Having a music program in a school can drastically increase the scores of all the students in the school. No one can put a price on education. Through musical training, people with ADD or ADHD in schools can learn how to control their actions and learn how to concentrate on one thing at a time for a longer period of time, in ways not available to the children in schools where music and other fine arts are not offered. It is extremely beneficial to maintain an art and music program to allow students to access their full potential.
People may say that arts education isn 't important because it can take away time from the core subjects and some students may find it uninteresting. I heavily disagree because it can provide students with an opportunity to express their creative capacities, increases the chances of the student participating in community services and decreases the chances of that student watching television, and it increases a student 's social skills. Oftentimes, teachers give out loads of homework that are not essential to student learning. Some people believe that homework teaches students discipline by teaching them time management. Teachers.” This may cause the principle to get involved, if the teachers are not providing a good positive example, then the students will just follow and never be able to learn and succeed. If the student is doing all their work and still not succeeding in their classes, the teacher who is showing such habits must be distracted from their job. While this may impact those kids that are focused on, the other kids are pushed aside on the back burner. The main reason behind this is that teachers are forced to have their students reach a certain level of success by standards set by the nation and their bosses. The number of tests that students have to take removes their ability to be creative and have an opinion. Bronwyn Williams expresses this when she says, “Standardized testing, to be standardized, must create questions that leave no room for interpretation…allow for no independent meaning making from students.” (154).
