One of the most conspicuous trends in the 21st century is a closer connection between countries. We are now living in the world of integration and cooperation in which the activities of cross-culture communication has grown along with economic development and mass media explosion. Integrating into a new nation is not an easy job. It is advisable that when in a Rome, do as the Romans do. This means that one should adapt to the customs of societies when he visits them, or behave in an appropriate manner according to how people around him behave.
Taking cross-culture communication into consideration, it is my opinion that this proverb should be followed to some extent.
The best way to learn about a foreign culture is to adapt to that culture. This is a way to broaden knowledge about the customs and practices of the residents. When ones get involved in the life of local people, communication between them and local people becomes easier. As a result, cross-culture communication procedure is faster and faster and their mutual understanding in cultural background is promoted. Because the cultural beliefs have varied from country to country, people need to get embark in and follow the real life of local people to deepen their understanding about the regional culture. The difference between the ping-pong and bowling conversation styles or directness and indirectness will be the main barrier to the newcomers.
