2.4. Digital Literacy and skills In today’s world, digital literacy and skills reinforces real participation in fundamental parts of life and work. Furthermore, it is essential to own digital skills and competencies to take advantage of the growing power of technology access. Though many definitions of digital literacy exist, digital capabilities and proficiencies are best appreciated on a scale that ranges from basic practical skills to higher level specialised skills (UNESCO, 2017). Describing and understanding digital literacy may be simpler when its contrast with traditional proficiency. As one considers literacy especially in teaching, it is thought of as communicating messages through interpreting and translating using the phonetic alphabet framework. In other words, traditionally literacy is described as containing a literacy skillset of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Contemporary descriptions of digital literacy are as follows (Ragno, 2014): • Gilster (1997) describes digital literacy as “the ability to understand information in multiple formats from a wide range of sources when it is presented via computers” (Gilster, 1997, p. 1 Cited in Ragno, 2014). • Kajder (2010) remarked that digital literacy allows us to “examine practices tied to constructing and critically understanding the modes made possible by digital tools” (Kajder, 2010, p. 8 Cited in Ragno, 2014). • Rheingold (2012) uses the phrase literacy to include social competencies required in
