If I was writing a paper for English, I would be able to think of it through various modes- almost as if I were creating a movie. Anything seemed possible because Luke Skywalker lived in a galaxy far, far away. I did not have the skills yet to create what I consumed, but I watched movies as if I was a third party, irrelevant character tagging along for a ride. I became infatuated with things I did not understand. It was not until I received my first camera that I felt complete. My world became infinitely larger; I was able to capture pictures and videos of everything around me. In addition to the creativity that ensued, many opportunities became available. The world, in my perspective, came through the viewfinder of a camera. I was able to become focused on being multimodal and join discourse communities. Not only did I become hopelessly attached to my camera, but it was delicately intertwined with my identity. It expanded my understanding of film and photography and lead me to realize how commonplace digital media is in the world. My digital literacy with a camera provided me all of the previously mentioned things- as well as a chance to find my passion in the world. Due to the relationship between my understanding of digital literacy and the influences of a camera in my life, I have been able to be adaptable and diligent in honing my skills.
