The United States President, Barack Obama, quoted "In a world of complex threats, our security and leadership depends on all elements of our power - including strong and principled diplomacy." Diplomacy encourages the respect for the foreign policies and prohibits war. Meaning, it exists for the protection of states and for the reduction of conflicts among the states. Diplomacy on war is essential because war is destructive and diplomacy is the only peaceful settlement that can prevent it; thus, the diplomatic efforts to anticipate war are the first and last true defense. War is said to be "the result of failed diplomacy (Benn, n.d.)". It is a heinous threat to human welfare that can lead to unpredictable outcomes. Clausewitz (1873), asserted …show more content…
Diplomacy is done through negotiation or the significant act of offering and counteroffering of both states until they reach an agreement which will reduce the conflict or completely prevent the probable war. Diplomacy can only be truly effective when negotiation is a success and compromise is possible. This was effectively done with the Agreement on the Prevention of Nuclear Power between Russia and the United States of America, which was signed due to the growing tension between them during the Cold War. It prevented both Western superpowers on reducing each other to radioactive dust, and destroying the world economy and the world itself. Diplomacy strengthens the development of international societies by preventing war. A broadly shared sense of justice is fundamental in order to reduce the need for battle and promote a more harmonious future. This was also shown during the first Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit of 1976, the member-states signed the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC) which states the following fundamental principles they must upheld: 1) mutual respect for the independence, sovereignty, equality, territorial integrity, and national identity of all nations, 2) the right of every state to lead its …show more content…
What are the possible diplomatic solution to war? None, but there is such thing as diplomatic effort. As mentioned, diplomacy is limited once war is declared. The tasks of diplomacy are to stop the power-hungry states who think that hostility will give positive results and strengthen the development of international society. Diplomats maintain the so-called balance of power, the preemptive measure to avoid inequality in the concentration of power among states. With this, victory is unpredictable and states are less likely to initiate war. Modern states now have a common thinking that war is never brief and bloodless, and will not give them a rewarding victory. There are organizations like EU and ASEAN that were established as diplomatic efforts in an attempt to achieve peace, enhance political and economic cooperation, and maintain the balance of power to prevent war. The European Union (EU) that has 28 members act as one in world affairs. It was established as a defensive wall and an area of freedom and justice against the return of war by peacefully resolving conflicts, surviving all the crisis they face, spreading freedom and democracy, and supporting unity at any cost. It brings prosperity, and demands "that all EU countries adhere to basic principles of democracy, human rights and the peaceful resolution of disputes.(Birdwell et al., n.d.)" The member-states "share
Conflict resolution in the United States may be achieved by the cooperation of states, opening up proper channels for information to flow, and through the prevention of Russia taking any further action which may cause harm. While the institutions and rules put into place do not explicitly assist states in achieving their respective self-interests, through cooperation these states, such as the United States, increase their security and chance of
Since the beginning of time, war has been practiced for numerous reasons ultimately to benefit a group of people or nations. But, when war divides the world into two different sides with the capability to destroy faster than we can create, it makes us question, is war really worth it? With the aftermath of World War One, people we’re still divided, but for a different reason, after a war with a catastrophic amount of deaths we had militarists advocating to fight and pacifists demanding peace. The two sources I have used from this essay comes from a European militarist, Friedrich Von Bernhardi with his book “War a Biological Necessity” and United States pacifists, William James, in his book “Moral Equivalent of War”. Therefore this essay will review the
War is described here as a “Chronic Illness”. Furthermore, Remarque writes this to also take a stab at the faulty idea of Nationalism which causes way more harm than good and basically forces people to enlist in the army who have no business being involved
War. Is it a necessary injustice? Does it leave us in triumph or with shattered dreams? War can bring brutality and death to many innocent people, but it can also create unity and result in freedom. The repercussions of war rely on war itself.
The Voices of War Student Joshua Hosking has a knack for the study of war and poetry and has in the past had a one on one interview with a veteran from the Vietnam War (1954 - 1975). War: it’s a bloody, brutal and cruel experience for all sides. One minute you’re peering out of your trench; then the next, you have a bullet torn through your skull.
Although anti-war elements often argue that war could be avoided if only the prospective protagonist would sit down and talk things over, it is important to understand how a sit down works to be successful. Communication between two conflicting parties is a tough process whether it is between two people, two businesses or two or more countries. There is no way to know for sure if sitting down and talking things over could have prevented the war of 1812, it may have helped, but it would have just delayed the inevitable. A disagreement that leads to conflict is no different whether it is between two people or two countries. The only difference is the scale of the people affected.
Just America or Just in War? Throughout the decades, history has recorded all the wars in which the United States has participated in. Some may consider that the United States’ participation in foreign affairs may have been cruel, or unnecessary; while in other cases, others find it essential for the United States to fight for the common good. Therefore, philosophers—in the pursuit of justice—have designed methods that dictate how a nation can justly engage into a war, one of this methods being the Just War theory.
Did the EU’s goal of shared peace between lots of different cultures and people work out? The European Union, also known as the EU is a supranational organization that consists of 28 different countries. The EU was made to bring together countries that were torn apart by the war and to create peace between those countries. The EU works toward shared goals and issues yet remain separate countries all the same. The benefits of being a member in the European Union does not outweigh the costs due to loss of sovereignty, social unrest and peace, economic issues, and cultural identity with the diversity of languages and cultures.

For Mearsheimer, this is the very basis of realistic thinking and in turn equates international order to anarchy. 2. Great powers maintain and continue to acquire militaristic capabilities in order to eradicate the idea of weakness and establish sovereignty over lesser powers. 3. A country can never be sure of another country’s motive hence each party is left
Whenever a war occurs, selfishness and greed always follows. Finally, war is never something to wish for because all that follows is suffering. In order to overcome war, sacrifices that bring out the worst in people must always be made.
The brutality of war has scarred and devastated the world since the beginning of time, and has drastically changed over the course of history. Many precious lives of loved ones have been lost to war and continue to as fighting rages on. Famous Revolutionary War hero, George Washington, stated “My first wish [as president] is to see this plague of mankind, war, banished from the earth” (George Washington Quotes). General Washington witnessed the terror of war while fighting for independence from Great Britain. Against his wishes, war and violence continued as history went on.
September 17th, 1978 “The treaty was signed by Egyptian President Anwar El Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin…”The negotiations were done in secret at Camp David, and were led by U.S. President Jimmy Carter.” In 1978 on September 17th, the U.S. arranged the negotiation to take place where the leaders of the countries could not be harmed by bias people. This shows how the influence of a country intervening in a situation can bring out a positive outcome. This is present in source E too. 1853, the U.S. sent U.S. Navy’s Commodore Perry with a letter from U.S. President Millard Fillmore.
The first great-war shattered the human mind so profound that out of its aftermaths’ emerged a fresh discipline (in 1919 at the University of Whales known to us as International Relations) proposed to prevent war. “It was deemed by the scholars that the study of International Politics shall find the root cause of the worlds political problems and put forward solutions to help politicians solve them” (Baylis 2014:03). International Relations happened to play the role of a ‘correcting-mechanism’ restoring the world order of peace and amity by efforting at its best to maintain the worlds’ status quo. However with the emergence of a second world war much more massive that the first put at stake all the values of that young discipline of IR. The
Bertrand Russell, a British author, mathematician, and philosopher said this quote. This quote is saying war doesn’t solve anything except for proving who can survive. “War does not determine who is right - only who is
