Important actions have been taken in several countries fighting against the violations of domestic workers’ rights, indicating the growing governmental awareness: for example the requirement to open a new bank account for salary payments to domestic workers in Austria , the modification of rules related to visa schemes in the United Kingdom , the introduction of federal minimum wage and regular meetings with domestic workers in order to follow up with reported rights violations in Switzerland , among others.

However, several significant deficiencies still continue to exist. According to the study conducted by the German Institute of Human Rights several recommendations have been put ahead. The cooperation between non-governmental organizations and Protocol departments, as well as, the support and counseling services provided to those victims, who are experiencing such violations are of major importance. In addition to that, numerous legal and institutional measures are to be set up by foreign ministries in host countries regulating the entry and registration of those domestic workers, allowing them to scan the employment contracts and decide whether it echoes certain criterions (such as working hours, minimum wages, accommodation, etc.), while keeping in mind that those contracts have to be coherent with the …show more content…

Foreign ministries should not draw back from declaring a diplomat persona non grata, because the rule is there for a reason!
