E-Health has been defined as an amalgamation of healthcare system and Information Communication Technology (ICT) to enable better health and healthcare delivery (Nykanen, 2006). It includes all applications of information communication technologies to promote healthcare services support, delivery and education for improving efficiency in health care delivery to the citizens. Many factors contribute to the poor state of the medical sector of Nigeria, and in fact many developing countries, two of the most important being record keeping and accessibility. Estonia has developed digital services in healthcare, education, banking, elections, and entrepreneurship. In Estonia, the government provides the majority of these services. Estonian eHealth services include digital prescriptions and digital patient records (Sofia and William, 2015). A number of governmental departments and public foundations are instrumental to the functioning of the Estonian system. The Estonian eHealth Foundation promotes and develops national digital solutions for the healthcare system. The aim of the foundation is to promote the development of a patient centered healthcare system with the use of technology. The foundation aspires to help patients make informed decisions around their health and treatment (Sofia and William, 2015).
Going by the successes recorded in terms of health care delivery system in these countries, I believe that the improvement can be replicated in Nigeria by adopting and implementing a robust and all-encompassing E-Health infrastructure that will be directed to the specific needs of the country while taking cognizance of our unique nature.
