Schools socialise young people into the basic values of society. These values have important functions in society as a whole. It can be stated here that education performs certain roles for the society. At the same time education is also conditioned by the social structure. Society creates educational institutes such as schools, colleges and universities to perform certain functions in accomplishing its end.
That education plays a crucial role in a person’s lifetime cannot be denied and therefore, education is a basic human right for every child. It should be regarded as a way of improving the lives of all people, including children. In addition, the right to education is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Quality education gives way to progress and development both of societies and of individuals and it helps pave the way for a successful future. Schools in all societies were purposely created as a challenge to preserve the contents and practical social, political and economic heritage of society.
Randi Weingarten once said, “A high-quality public education can build much-needed skills and knowledge. It can help children reach their God-given potential. It can stabilize communities and democracies. It can strengthen economies.” Weingarten, an American activist, illustrates the need for educational reform as a life raft for future generations. We must incorporate what is best for the students by helping further develop their education and not what will get us the most funding possible.
Public schooling is the best option for high schoolers to become well-rounded citizens in the process. Having strong friendships with your peers can make you more independent, community benefiting citizens. Diane Levin, Ph.D., author of Remote Control Childhood states, “‘Friendships help children gradually learn to be independent, contributing members of a community and it’s just as important as their academic growth’” (Your Child’s). Independence and good citizenship is a necessity in college and being.

Education is a form of learning, in which the knowledge, skills and habits are transferred from one generation to the next. It doesn’t always means learning or getting new information but teaching others how to apply what they learned. According to (Yero, 2001-2002): Nowadays we can say that the major contributors to our education are schools/colleges however it doesn’t necessary mean that it can’t take place at home, schools, colleges, universities or even in jail. Education opens our mind, giving the ability to understand the world we are living in. It teaches us about the world in which we live, about the people surrounding us, giving information of how the world was and how it may become.
Apart from that, education also controls the individual development, social development and nation development. Receiving a good education will help empower you, make you strong enough to look after yourself in any given situation. Educated people will be able to keep aware of their surroundings as well as the rules and regulations of the society they live in. It’s only through knowledge that you can able to question authority for its negligence. It is only then you can stand your rights as a citizen and seek improvement in the structural functioning of governance and economy.
