Hard-of-Hearing Students Hard-of-hearing students comprise the majority of students with hearing loss enrolled in K-12 public education. They outnumber deaf students, generally performing better academically because they have less severe hearing loss. The needs of hard-of-hearing students in mainstream programs differ from those of deaf and hard-of-hearing students using American Sign Language. Hard-of-hearing students have cultural, social, and identity needs and feel excluded in the Hearing and Deaf Worlds. Hard-of-hearing students may withstand internal conflict while discovering American Sign Language and the Deaf community.
The United States is a place of freedom. We are a mixing pot that unifies as one. Many religions, cultures, and languages make their home in the Unites States. Many foreigners see the U.S. as an opportunity to seek better lives and education, but when it comes to foreigners and native-born non-English speakers that do not yet know English, it becomes a little more difficult to go about an average day let alone make a better future. Children in school often become English Language Learners, or ELL, to assimilate to the American standards.
PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS SKILLS OF CHILDREN WITH COCHLEAR IMPLANT Shivraj L Bhimte : Shrikrushna Gawande Introduction : Earliest study in children with hearing impairment reported that, the average high school graduate who was deaf demonstrated a third-to-fourth grade reading level (Furth, 1966; Krose, Lotz, Puffer, & Osberger, 1986). 2.1.2. Accent and Phonetics Phonetics, the sub-area of linguistics that studies the sounds of speech, defines an accent as a specific pronunciation which is determined by the phonetic habits of the speaker 's native language carried over to his or her use of another language (O’Grady, Archibald, Aronoff, Rees-Miller, 2005). In terms of phonetics the accent is viewed as the speaker’s ability/ inability to pronounce the phonemes of a second language correctly. So the accent is what makes the speech of non-native speaker sound differently. In the process of acquiring the first language we learn how to accommodate our articulatory apparatus in order to produce the phonemes, interestingly, when speaking the native language we almost never think how the sounds are articulated.
