According to studies conducted by MacMillan in 2012, social and environmental psychology have established that the quality of the physical environment have a critical effect and consequence on people’s attitude and performance, and the organization 's working culture. In the mid-1950 's, an important and influential theoretical model was produced Frederick Herzberg, often known as his Two-Factor Theory of Job Satisfaction. Herzberg suggested two different sets of factors namely Motivation and Hygiene. Motivation factors motivate one to perform better and encourage people to put extra effort into a job; are the ones inherent into the work itself like a sense of achievement, advancement, recognition. In contrast, Hygiene factors are linked to the work environment that can lead to dissatisfaction and therefore reduced performance, which includes things such as style of supervision, benefits and physical working conditions (Mackay, 2007).
