Family is very important. The ideal family helps get you out of bad situations, stands up for you, and will always be there for you. All families have different ways of doing this though. Some are more hands on and some are more laid back. Everyone needs a family. You really have a choice, maybe you don 't get along with your parents and your real family is your friend group, or you don 't have friends and your parents are your family.

In the beginning of the book Ponyboy explains that the greasers always look after eachother and without that nobody would survive the life that they live daily. “When you’re in a gang, you stick up for the other members. If you don’t stick up for them, stick together, make like brothers, it isn’t a gang anymore.”There was a part at the beginning of the Book where Ponyboy talks about a time where Sodapop was attacked by a bunch of soc’s but luckily his family (the greasers) found him and took care of him until he was back to health. And finally they will be there for you. "We 're all we have left. We ought to be able to stick together against everything. If we don 't have each other, we don 't have anything. There will be a point in your life when all you will want to do is be alone and with a good family they will know to respect that, but the second you are out of that phase you can bet they will be right back at your side cheering you on. In the novel entitled The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton, fourteen year old Ponyboy Curtis is faced with the deaths of his beloved parents. Now under the care of his oldest brother Darry, Ponyboy and his other brother, Sodapop, are forced to stay out of trouble to avoid being taken away to a boys’ home. However, these brothers are members of a gang referred to as “greasers”, which poses a threat to their good reputation. As Ponyboy was getting attacked, the rest of the Greasers (Dally, Steve, Darry, Sodapop, Two-Bit, and Johnny) showed up at the scene to protect Ponyboy.
