The Importance Of Farming In California

During the period 1865-1900, American agriculture changed significantly by many things. However, many technological innovations and government policies that were appearing during the late 1800’s made the agricultural aspect of America change drastically, many technological innovations, such as inventions that limited farmers workload, and government policies, that had farmers riled, had made a wedge in between the stable agricultural economy. Therefore, technology and policies had a bigger impact on the economic conditions farmers had to face, causing many changes to the American agriculture during the 1800’s.

California may have gained statehood on September 9, 1850, but the roots that the early Spaniards created, has made California the mecca it is today. California is very diverse state it has desserts, mountains, and is next to the ocean. This creates endless possibilities for growth in many different economy drive industries to flood this great state. The major industries that have made California this mecca are the movie studio system, the aerospace industry, and the agriculture business. In my option the most important industry in California is the agriculture business, I will try not to bore you with my two cents on this topic. Agriculture is a major industry for the Golden State. People in this society believes every statement that is said by an important person true. In California, new reports has claimed California to be in a drought due to the waste of water. However, is California’s drought report an actual problem?

The book is wonderful source for accurate historical view of the time. In the early 1800s, the south—and most of the north, for that matter—used a subsistence economy, where crops and goods were made locally by families for themselves and their communities. Family farms were basically forced to use a subsistence economy, simply because the lack of fast transportation. If they attempted to ship their crops to other ports and towns where it was needed, the crops would rot well before they ever made it. In the south, cotton was made using slave labor, but the harvests weren’t as large as they could be. The process of harvesting was slow—as it was with many crops across the north and south—and the wield was decent.

A drought is an occurrence where there is very little rainfall, which results in a shortage of water. Drought can last up to ten years in certain places, especially desert areas. Droughts are extremely difficult to predict, and produce cracked land. They are very dangerous in places with little food and little water. Droughts can also affect farmers, due to it being so hot that their plants die. Farmers lose money during droughts.

Since its beginning, the American ways of farming had always been gradually evolving, but in the time between 1865 and 1900, it transformed like never before. The American tradition of agriculture would experience dramatic changes, as the growth of production and agribusiness would ensue from revolutions in technology, massive increase in population, and alterations in government policies.

The huge influx of people into California, especially the city of San Francisco, opened up many more opportunities in the economic scheme of things. Manufacturing, trade, merchant businesses, agriculture, entertainment market, and the newly formed banks and financial institutions all flourished and prospered because of the gold rush. The economy in California blossomed. The national economy also was impacted by the gold rush and did well because many companies across the country invested, in some way, shape or form, in the gold rush.

Although the current drought is exceptional for its high temperatures and affecting the largest supply of water in Southwestern United States, the Colorado River Basin, by decreasing the water levels. With the lack of water source it is also negatively impacting human health, agriculture, energy, and ecosystems. Water resources are crucial for any sort of living organism, but very scarce due the current drought, which holds complications for the future and alterations people have to construct to maintain water sustainability.

With all these uncontrollable floods there would be a shortage in crops because if they receive large amounts of water they can not take it and would die.

As said before, the great plains environment would have cycles of dry years, the drought during the 1930’s has been recorded as deficient in rainfall, extreme hot temperatures, and high winds. This spelled disaster for the 300,000 square miles of over farmed land in the great plains. The lack of rain stunted crops, the intense heat dried and withered them, and the wind would blow them away. Agriculture, the basis of the world’s food source, is a very large portion of the average American’s diet; as well as the main source of clothing material. Agriculture is important in Tennessee for this reason. Agriculture is not only crops, but includes the entirety of merchandise on a farm. The diet of the average American includes a massive amount of these resources. The economy of Tennessee greatly relies on agriculture. As reliable as agriculture is, natural disasters can be the disaster of society. Agriculture is a very large portion of society itself.

During 1849, the gold in Northern California brought people from all over the country and eventually, the world. People were headed to San Fransico any way possible. By boat, wagon, horseback or even on foot and leaving many towns completely empty. This increased profit for businesses selling pans, shovels and picks, but they weren’t the only ones ( Competing Visions 111). “ Luzena Stanley Wilson, who came with her husband and family to the Gold Rush country, remembered selling her freshly made biscuits for five dollars each” ( Competing Visions 111). Ranchers also saw a boost in cattle value, as the demand for food increased.

That is what I love about being a Californian. I can walk through my community and witness different cultures within our country. In terms of how I keep myself getting frustrated with ignorant or hurtful comments from my buddies that I served with, I do my best to first find the humor in it. Then I do my best to educate them on how I was raised or how I consider the culture of many Californians to value the empowerment of women and to treat them equally. I also express that my mother, older sister and my wife are very vocal, goal driven individuals that follow their professional and personal desires.
